Bart Baker Quit YouTube — Now He’s Trying To Get Big on the Chinese Internet

Bart Baker, former YouTube celebrity, starts off most mornings by screaming in mangled Chinese.

For the past few years, Bart’s bread and butter was edgy parody music videos, mocking stars like Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift. Good videos easily racked in tens of millions of views; a million views was a dud.

But when YouTube started de-prioritizing vulgar videos in order to keep family-friendly advertisers happy, Bart’s income took a massive plunge.

So when he got a mysterious email from a company promising to catapult him to stardom in China, he figured he’d give it a shot. A few videos later, he had millions of followers, in a country he’d never even visited.

Now, Bart’s days start with live chat and song sessions with his millions of Chinese followers on Kwai, a Chinese social media app. Then, his Chinese manager sends him a Chinese song, which Bart translates into English, with the help of Google Translate. Hours later, Bart’s English version of the track is burning up the top ranks in Douyin (China’s version of TikTok).

Bart sees immense potential in the Chinese market, and has already announced that he is quitting YouTube. Meanwhile, his Chinese manager is concerned that Bart’s American persona could be trouble in China, if it isn’t properly handled.

VICE News met with Bart Baker in Los Angeles, and his manager in Shanghai, to see if Bart’s path might be a way forward for other struggling YouTubers.

Vape Influencers Think FDA’s Crackdown On Juul Won’t Matter (HBO)

Today, the Food and Drug Administration announced its long-awaited e-cigarette regulations. The new rules, subject to approval, will require more stringent age verification for people buying flavored nicotine. In a statement announcing the rules, FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb acknowledged that vaping is less harmful than cigarettes but said he was shocked at how widespread teen e-cigarette usage is, which he believes makes kids more likely to try smoking.

On Tuesday vaping giant Juul preemptively announced it would temporarily stop selling flavored nicotine vapor pods to retail stores, until they impose strict age verification mechanisms, like ID scanners. And on Juul’s website, users will have to provide the last four digits of their social security number to buy flavored pods.

But all of the new rules from the FDA probably won’t stop the army of kids on sites like Youtube and Instagram who are essentially evangelists for the coolness of vaping. Juul doesn’t sponsor any of these influencers. They get their money from companies that make third party Juul pods, other vape juices, or bigger vape rigs.

Juul has transformed the e-cigarette landscape in just a couple years. It’s now worth 15 billion dollars and controls 70% of the market. In other words, it has a lot to lose. Juuls have been incredibly easy to get, and incredibly easy to hide. And that’s made them a hit among high schoolers. Kids can hit the Juul in class without their teacher noticing, and school administrators have been begging for a solution.

So ahead of the FDA’s ruling, Juul moved to appease regulators, not just with the pause on flavors, but also by deleting its Facebook and Instagram accounts, so that it wouldn’t be seen as marketing to kids. But Dash Drips and Donny Smokes have no plans to stop posting.

A young would-be Iraqi builder parades around the city of Samarra, 100 kilometres north of Baghdad, to show off his car inspired by the legendary silent actor Charlie Chaplin, drawing curious crowds. Abderrahman scraped together the fiery red vehicle, modelled after the Caterham 7, a super-lightweight sports car, despite “a lack of tools and support.” He says he was inspired by an extract of the Chaplin film ‘A Day’s Pleasure’ on YouTube, in which Chaplin appears to be driving a similar vehicle.
