Corruption frustrates hemp producers in Portugal

Since medical Cannabis companies have been heavily favored by the Portuguese government, it is possible that they managed to influence the bureaucracy to blockage hemp. This is not such an unreasonable assumption when considering that Ângelo Correia, co-founder of the PSD and ex-Minister of internal affairs has 40% shares of @TerraVerde (a medical Cannabis company from Israel) (Source dn.pt) or Jaime Gama, former president of the General Assembly is consultant to @Tilray Portugal, a branch of a Canadian medical Cannabis company (Source: publico.pt). What would be the reason of connecting such ‘advocates’ with political connections to your business if not for those reasons? And given Portugal’s current state of affairs when it comes to corruption, the idea might not be too far fetched. The Portugal Corruption Report of GAN – an anti-corruption organisation) states:
“While the country has made significant progress in the past decade, recurring corruption scandals involving high-level politicians, local administrators, and businesses abusing public funds have revealed that safeguards to counter corruption, and abuses of power have been somewhat inefficient in Portugal.” (Source ganintegrity.com)

But why should medical Cannabis industries have an interest in blocking industrial hemp? The explanation is simple. Conditions for the plant are good in Portugal, if not to say excellent. The medical Cannabis companies want to make as much money as possible by saving operation cost. The cheapest way to grow is in the field, outdoors. Why is that a problem with industrial hemp around? Because the industrial hemp could pollinate the medical crops, causing seeds to appear in their feminized crops, costing them money. Of course the problem could be solved by growing in greenhouses with appropriate filters. This way hemp and medical Cannabis could coexist peacefully. Obviously it would be cheaper to pull some strings in the back.

EIHA16, A man with a vision, Ben Dronkers

Ben Dronkers, a pioneer, a visionary founder of HempFlax and cofounder of the EIHA, was also present at the EIHA16 convention.
What worries Dronkers is that the activists and the people who have worked with cannabis for decades prior to legalization are being left or even pushed out of the legal industry. Dronkers: “I really believe that cannabis is a medicine, it’s a beautiful plant, it’s food, it should grow in every garden. You should be able to grow your own medicine. If you have a plant in your garden, the stock market and the big companies can do what they want. I still believe in the soul, in the spirit of cannabis and that it should be for everybody. It should be totally legal.”

EIHA16, hemp and novel food

The Novel Food classification of concentrated CBD that the EU published in January 2019 has only added to the confusion and uncertainty. The EIHA is actively lobbying to get the Novel Food classification off the table or at least keep CBD products on the shelves during the registration process. Earlier this year, the EIHA published extensive evidence contradicting the EU’s claim that hemp foods and hemp extracts -including CBD- were not available in Europe before 1997.

So what about Hemp and CBD in China?

In China, just about 2.800 B.C, the first rope in the world was twisted out of hemp fibres and at the same time, the first paper was created out of hemp. There are indications that in the 28th century B.C. in China, clothes were also made out of hemp fibres. The oldest, preserved textile is dated back to approx. 1000 B.C. In the 17th century at the pinnacle of sailing, hemp experienced its heyday in Europe. Into the 18th century hemp fibres together with flax, nettle und wool were the central raw materials of the European textile industry. For paper production, pulp was produced out of rags.
The decline of the hemp industry began in the 18th century and continued until the end of the 20th century. The 21st century is when everything changed, and hemp and marijuana industry saw a hike, and companies like supreme cannabis took the stand in providing the best quality cannabis to make people’s lives better.

So what is happening with hemp nowadays in China?

We talked with YanHua Huang, director Bioneovation about the enormous boost of hemp products, containing no more than 0.3% THC, in all its forms. Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the non-psychotropic cannabinoids in industrial hemp. Since 2 years it is fully allowed in China. Cannabidiol not only has a plethora of beneficial health effects, but it also has no relevant side-effects, even when it is administered at high doses. CBD is increasingly used as a food supplement and in food supplement compositions, and ingredient in cosmetics.

Ethics in Cannabis with Dr. Jonathan Newman

At the International Cannabis Policy Conference organized by FAAAT, we got to interview Dr. Jonathan Newman. Dr. Jonathan Newman is a social anthropologist at the University of Sussex, where he researches the cannabis industry in Europe.

You may have heard about the Paris Agreement before, as Trump famously said he would withdraw the United States of America from the accord. However, the rest of the world is still very much in favor of the Paris Agreement which deals with climate change. The Paris Agreement is an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and starting in the year 2020. This too will affect the cannabis industry.

WHO, stuck between politics How to reschedule cannabis within the UN

Since 1961 The United Nations looks upon cannabis as a Schedule I drug with “no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.” The plant is scheduled as a dangerous drug, like heroin, in the Single Convention on Narcotic and Drugs.
But things are about to change!
Earlier this year, the Expert Committee on Drug Dependence, part of the World Health Organization, released a pre-review report of cannabis that included several positive, evidentiary findings. And, cannabis has not been on the agenda of the World Health Organization since 1954.
Now in 2018, we are present at the Commission on Narcotic Drugs 61st reconvened session in Vienna to watch the recommendations, how to re-schedule cannabis, presented by the WHO!

Watch this first part of a Vienna Special.

We are due to make the second soon, The International Cannabis Policy Conference with even the best speakers ever we have not shown before. Stay tuned!

Cannabis Light. High CBD, Low THC. A New Hype? | Cannabis News Network

Cannabis Light is the latest cannabis hype coming out of Europe, where several countries have loopholes allowing the growth and sale of cannabis containing low THC (usually less than 1%) and high CBD levels. It’s already big business.

The loopholes were only discovered a couple years ago. Switzerland was the first country in 2016 to decriminalize cannabis with less than 1% THC as a tobacco substitute.

Italy would follow quickly when a law regulating hemp production went into effect. Originally designed for industrial hemp, the Italian government however, forgot to regulate the hemp flowers.

The difference between Switzerland and Italy mainly being Cannabis Light is regulated as tobacco in Switzerland, while in Italy Cannabis Light cannot be ‘smoked or eaten’.

To really understand the green wave Cannabis Light is producing, we went on a road trip to Cannabis Light farms in Switzerland and Italy.

Will the full potential of hemp be blocked?

The full potential of hemp is endless. No other plant in the world can feed you, then clothe you and you can build your house with. And if you’re sick, it might help you. Hemp will alter products in your home, from food to building materials to paper.

The main boost to the hemp industry comes from the increasing acknowledgment of the beneficial cannabinoids in the plant, like cannabidiol or CBD. CBD has a plethora of health benefits, with no side-effects, and is more and more used as a food supplement and an ingredient in cosmetics.

Regulations are in the works, but will they benefit hemp producers and it’s users? Go more in-depth and read up at: https://www.cannabisnewsnetwork.com/potential-of-hemp-blocked/
