A golden retriever was rescued after being trapped under rubble in Villa San Lorenza a Flavione, just outside of Amatrice, Friday, where it had spent over nine days after the region was hit by an earthquake on August 24.

The dog, named Romeo, was found by owners after they attempted to find him, calling his name in and around destroyed buildings outside the city. The dog was discovered after he responded to his owners by barking.

The earthquake that killed an estimated 284 people was felt across central Italy, including in the capital Rome, some 126 kilometers (76 miles) away from the quake’s epicentre, in the town of Norcia.
