Vienna cemetery offers a ‘return to nature’ | AFP

Vienna’s Kahlenberg Cemetery was once a space reserved for the nation’s rich and famous, but since October it is dedicating itself to so-called natural burials available to the general public. This ritual which involves being buried in a biodegradable urn at the foot of a tree after cremation is increasingly popular in Vienna. ‘The urns and the ashes become part of nature,’ says Peter Schauer managing Director of the cremation company Danubia, ‘You nourish the tree, you become a part of the circle of life again.’

First “Japanese Emperor” offspring hatch in Europe | AFP

For the first time in Europe Japan’s national butterfly, the “Japanese Emperor”, has given offspring, in Austria’s Schoenbrunn Zoo in Vienna. The males are bright blue on the upper side of the wings. The females are bigger, but unimposing and brown. This was made possible by the partnership between the district of Hietzing (13th municipal district of Vienna) and the city of Tamba in the south of the Japanese peninsula of Honschu, which brought several eggs and caterpillars of the butterfly as presents and handed them over to the zoo. The caterpillars pupate next year in June and hatch in July.
