What Made The Da Vinci Painting Worth $450 Million (HBO)

After nearly 20 minutes of nail biting bidding on Wednesday night, Leonardo da Vinci’s painting Salvator Mundi, shattered the world record for the most expensive work of art ever sold at auction. Including fees, the 500 year old rare masterpiece sold for $450.3 million.

Some questioned the authenticity of the painting as truly Da Vinci but with a price tag that far surpassed initial estimates the concern now seems irrelevant.

Before the sale, Vice News Tonight went to Christie’s for a private viewing of Salvator Mundi with contemporary Brazilian artist Vik Muniz.

Italy Is Paying Libya To Intercept Migrants On The Mediterranean (HBO)

In the first six months of 2017, the number of migrants crossing the Mediterranean from Libya to Italy dropped by around half. This drastic fall in numbers was likely a result of the $236 million deal signed in February, in which Italy funds and trains the Libyan coastguards to divert migrants right back to Libya.

While the Italian government sees this as reason for celebration, the brunt of the migration crisis is now firmly on Libya. This is a problem given that the UN-backed Libyan Government of National Accord doesn’t have the means to effectively handle migrant trafficking and relies on the country’s 1,700 militias to do the job for them. By outsourcing this work to armed groups who themselves are implicated in smuggling, a bloody power struggle has erupted.

Vice News Tonight was the first foreign media to reach Libya’s migrant smuggling epicenter of Sabratha, and met the migrants caught up in the mayhem.

This Woman Pays Drug Users Not To Have Kids (HBO)

For the last 20 years Barbara Harris has driven across the country in a branded RV, advertising her non-profit to drug addicts and alcoholics. Her organization, Project Prevention, pays substance-abusers $300 to get sterilized or put on long-term birth control like the implant, or an IUD. To date, she has paid over 7,000 people, mostly women, to give up their fertility.

By using cash incentives, she feels like she is stopping a problem in it’s tracks. “We’re preventing women who are strung out on drugs and alcohol from conceiving a child,” Harris says, “Nobody has a right to force feed any child drugs and then deliver a child that may die or may have lifelong illnesses.”

It seems straightforward enough – but the ethical questions behind Harris program are not. Vice News Tonight caught up with Barbara Harris during her first RV road trip of the summer, where she targets areas where addicts or those who know them hang out and speaks to long-time critics who think Project Prevention may be contributing to the very problems Harris set out to solve two decades ago.

Equal Pay For Better Play: VICE News Tonight on HBO (Full Segment)

In March, five players on the U.S. women’s soccer team filed a complaint against the U.S. Soccer Federation for wage discrimination. The women are paid far less than the U.S. men’s soccer players despite being the most successful American soccer team in history.

“Fundamentally, it is the clearest case of gender pay discrimination that I think most people have ever seen,” U.S. Women’s National Team legal counsel Jeffrey Kessler told VICE News Tonight correspondent Allison McCann.

The players are also negotiating a new contract. Their current collective bargaining agreement expires on Dec. 31.

Meet The Woman Behind Hip-Hops Biggest Songs (HBO)

This segment originally aired Dec. 1, 2016, on VICE News Tonight on HBO.

Glenda Proby has been writing songs for famous men since she was 17 years old. Now 28 and rapping under the name Gizzle, she’s recording her debut album, The Jump, for Puff Daddy’s Bad Boy label. It drops in January.

“I always rapped my experiences,” Proby told VICE News Tonight. “I never thought of myself as a female rapper, or a female gay rapper, or queer rapper, but I know there’s all these categories that people are going to put me in so they can digest who I am and what’s going on.”

She often raps about what her life was like growing up in South Central L.A. on Exposition Blvd.

“Battle rapping, you know, it’s more of a masculine thing,” she said. “I feel like you either got it or you don’t.”
