Permanently Temporary: The Truth About Temp Labor (Part 2/5)

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

Temp labor is one of the fastest growing industries in the US. Increasingly, temp workers are part of a business strategy to keep costs down and profits high. From mega-retailers to mom-and-pop shops, temps are hired to do some of the hardest and most dangerous jobs. While more and more of the American workforce is comprised of temporary workers, they’re largely hidden from public view. Many of these workers stay silent, often having their livelihoods threatened if they speak out. Wanting to get a glimpse of this invisible workforce, VICE News traveled across the country, scouring warehouses, temp agencies, and temp towns in search of the people, who make our world of same day delivery possible.

Kerry Goes Full Retard: “You just don’t invade another country on phony pretext […]”

The US Secretary of State spoke today of the unacceptability of invading a sovereign country on phony pretexts in order to assert one’s own interests in the 21st century. But no, he was not speaking about the United States, as one might have thought.

“You just don’t invade another country on phony pretext in order to assert your interests,” John Kerry said during an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press. “This is an act of aggression that is completely trumped up in terms of its pretext. It’s really 19th century behaviour in the 21st century.”

Kerry has also threatened to isolate Russia economically and politically and warned of potential asset freezes and visa bans, adding to media and political hype that followed Russia authorization of sending a stabilization force in Crimea on official request from the authorities.

“There could be certainly disruption of any of the normal trade routine, there could be business drawback on investment in the country,” he said. “There could even be ultimately asset freezes, visa bans.”

Although Kerry was never challenged by the interviewer to comment in terms of that statement on Washington’s own constant threats to use force and military invasions in Iraq and Afghanistan, those who watched the interview immediately smelled the hypocrisy.

“Since when does the United States government genuinely subscribe and defend the concept of sovereignty and territorial integrity? They certainly are not doing that at the moment in Syria,” Marcus Papadopoulos, commentator for ‘Politics First’ told RT. “They certainly did not do that when they attacked Libya. They certainly didn’t do that when they invaded Iraq. They certainly didn’t do that when they attacked Serbia over Kosovo and then later on recognized Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence. The United States government merely pays lip service to sovereignty and territorial integrity, it picks and choses.”

Since the crisis in Ukraine escalated to a point where the lives of the Russian speaking population of Ukraine has become threatened, Kerry’s reaction comes, some believe, as the most ridiculous thus far, taking into account US own history of military actions all over the globe.

Exxon Oil Spill Town ‘Deserted Land’, Residents Still Getting Sick, Forced to Abandon Homes

Almost one year after ExxonMobil’s pipeline burst and caused a major oil spill near Mayflower, Arkansas, officials say the area is safe to live in. But locals are still suffering from dizziness, headaches, and nausea — prompting many to move away.

On March 29, 2013, Exxon’s Pegasus pipeline spilled thousands of barrels of Canadian crude oil in a suburban area near the town of Mayflower, sparking strong opposition to oil sands exploitation and the Keystone XL project. If approved, the Keystone pipeline would carry tar sand oil from Alberta, Canada through the US to Texas refineries.

US will Cling to Mass Surveillance like Nuclear Weapons – Assange to RT

Julian Assange said there is “no hope” that mass strategic interception — as it is termed by the US — will go away. The whistleblower then drew a historical analogy with how the US has retained nuclear weapons in the past.

US Judge Rules NSA Phone Surveillance Program is Legal

A United States federal judge said Friday that the National Security Agency’s controversial bulk phone data collection program doesn’t violate the law.

That ruling came courtesy of US District Judge William Pauley, who decided in favor of the NSA early Friday in a case filed this past June by the American Civil Liberties Union against Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.

‘Information Vampires’ Hoping to Charge Press Outlets for Publishing Snowden Leaks

Rather than working to correct the growing surveillance state lawmakers on both sides of the Atlantic are dragging their feet and exploring methods to crack down on the press, The Guardian in particular, journalist Tony Gosling told RT.

Officials from the UK intelligence agency GCHQ raided the Guardian newspaper’s London officers back in August in search of hardrives containing data leaked by former CIA employee Edward Snowden. Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger said the officials wanted the Guardian to destroy all the information from Snowden despite the fact the data had already been disseminated to different news organizations around the world.

Rusbringer is set to give evidence to an MP committee investigating counter-terrorism activities on Tuesday. The Guardian’s editor has criticized the UK government for its intimidation tactics and said the US and UK are making work increasingly difficult for journalists.

The hype around Fred V & Grafix is growing. Building on the success of the Goggles EP earlier this year, which contained the massive ‘Games People Play’, the dynamic duo from Devon return with ‘Here With You’. Released on the 28th of October.

Keeping it melodic and soulful and with uncompromising dancefloor energy – ‘Here With You’ features vocals from US songwriter Collin McLoughlin soaring over an anthemic drum+bass backbone. Rocking the floor at Hospitality events, ‘Here With You’ has been lighting up Fred V & Grafix DJ sets across the land.

The second track on this EP “Minor Happy” shows a more delicate side to the duo, combining a gentle piano riff with glass like snares. A riposte to last years anthem “Major Happy”, this track has already been picking up support from the likes of Sub Focus, so expect big things.
