’Future History’ is Nu:Tone’s fourth studio album. Nu:Tone is an artist with the kind of rich history and authority to be able to reach into drum+bass’ deepest past and create an album of snapshots from the many ages of jungle; with knowing nods to classic tracks and the sound of hallmark events – from ‘Swerve’ at the Velvet Rooms to ‘Logical Progression’ and ‘Hospitality at Heaven’.

Opening with the epic ‘‘Til Dawn’ – recalling New Deep Society’s ‘Warehouse Dayz of Glory’ – an apt mission statement for the project. Soul chanteuse Lea Lea adds spine tingling vocals to ‘Tides’ before Hospitality favourite Dynamite MC steps up to the mic with the infectious bassline wobbler ‘Cannibals’. Further into the dark interior of the album things get murky with twisted rap genius, and original Ultramagnetic MC, Kool Keith blessing ‘Metaphor 6000’. As the voice of the prodigy’s ‘Smack My B*tch Up’, it’s a rare appearance for the seminal US rapper, and a coup for Nu:Tone. Across thirteen tracks, ‘Future History’ is bursting with moments of genius – each track looking squarely forward through a prism of the past.

Few drum+bass artists command the same respect as Nu:Tone, both within the scene and across the wider dance music community, with his recent discography taking in remixes for the likes of 3 beat, Warner and Sony. Nu:Tone has stripped down and re-worked the likes of Axwell, Sandy Revera et al, with Major labels clamouring for his skills behind a mixing desk.

Black Dart is the US’ Answer to Drones: War Games

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

The US military has been experimenting with the use of drones for almost a century, but it’s only recently that technological advances have made unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) a game changer in warfare. Today, at least 79 countries field drones; 23 of those countries arm them.

Earlier this year, VICE News was one of the first media outlets ever granted access to the US military’s annual Black Dart exercise, a decade-old joint exercise that focuses on detecting, countering, and defeating UAVs.

As we watched tens of millions of dollars worth of military equipment go up against $1,000 drones, Black Dart demonstrated the way rapidly evolving drone technology is challenging the military’s most basic assumptions about controlling the air. (One civilian drone maker we visited told us that the technology he has at his fingertips is outpacing some R&D efforts at big aerospace contractors.) And so Black Dart continues to encourage innovation in the effort to keep the US military one step ahead in the cat-and-mouse game between drones and drone killers.

How China Humiliated a US President: Talking Heads

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

VICE News and the New York Review of Books have partnered to create Talking Heads, a series about the big issues of the day as seen by the Review’s distinguished contributors.

In the first episode, Orville Schell discusses his essay “China Strikes Back.” He recently joined Jimmy Carter on a visit to China, where the former president received a less-than-warm welcome by the country’s leaders. Carter re-established diplomatic relations between the United States and China, but how close are the two countries 35 years later? Schell explains how the snubbing reflects a dramatic shift in US-China relations.

VICE News sat down with Schell to discuss the significance of the diplomatic slight against Carter, and how the US might benefit from a better understanding of the “Chinese Dream.”

The Worst Fish in America: Asian Carpocalypse

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

VICE News correspondent Thomas Morton investigates Asian carp — a slimy, ugly, and often gargantuan species of fish that has taken over many waterways in the United States.

First introduced in the US in the 1960s to control weeds and parasites at aquatic farms in Arkansas, the bottom feeders eventually escaped and made their way through the Mississippi River system, eating almost everything in their path and severely damaging ecosystems across the Midwest. Today, government officials are concerned that the fish will invade the Great Lakes, destroy more ecosystems, wreak havoc on the region’s multibillion dollar fishing industry, and spread to almost every major waterway in the Northeast.

VICE News traveled across Illinois to see how people are dealing with the Asian carp invasion, visiting the Redneck Fishing Tournament — where the sole mission is to catch as many carp as possible — touring a processing plant trying to monetize the fish, and then heading to Chicago, where we learned that Asian carp are a symptom of a much larger issue.

Teenage Soldiers and Homemade Grenades: Ghosts of Aleppo (Part 2)

The Syrian city of Aleppo, under constant bombardment by air and threatened by both Syrian regime forces and Islamic State militants on the ground, is now one of the most dangerous places in the world. In addition to fighting the enemies at the gates, Aleppo’s rebels have to contend with adversaries within the city, including armed gangs of criminals and pro-Islamic State infiltrators.

While the US government is now ramping up military aid to the ostensibly secular Free Syrian Army, Aleppo’s Islamic Front rebels are holding their ground with homemade munitions. Considered too Islamist for support from the West, and too moderate for jihadist fundraisers, the Islamic Front is preparing for the final battle. VICE News followed Islamic Front fighters defending the rebel-held half of the city against overwhelming odds from both the might of the Syrian regime and the resurgent Islamic State.

US Envoy to Ukraine Caught Posting Fake Images on Twitter

Source: http://rt.com/news/187992-ukraine-drills-pyatt-fail/

http://fedgeno.com/links/

http://facebook.com/global.paradigm.shift

US ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt has been caught posting unverified images on his Twitter feed Monday, as he was showing off the ongoing US-Kiev military exercises in Ukraine.

Ambassador Pyatt first uploaded a picture of US and Ukrainian troops, which he said was taken in the morning at the military exercises in western Ukraine. Internet users quickly pointed out that the photo had already been published as early as July 31.

The ambassador then posted a picture of a German tank allegedly taking part in the drills. His tweet said that the Leopard 2 tank is taking part in Rapid Trident exercises near Lvov.

However, Twitter users found out that the posted image was actually taken from a YouTube video uploaded nearly one year ago – in October 2013.

UK journalist and RT contributor Graham Phillips called Pyatt out on Twitter, calling the ambassador a “liar” for posting old photographs.

This is not the first time ambassador Pyatt has been caught in a controversy over Ukraine’s internal affairs.

Earlier this year, a leaked conversation between Pyatt and US Assistant Secretary of State for Europe Victoria Nuland revealed the two of them discussing Ukrainian opposition leaders’ roles in the country’s future government.

“F**k the EU,” Nuland allegedly said in the phone call with Pyatt, which was taped and posted on YouTube in February.

The four-minute video – titled ‘Maidan puppets,’ referring to Independence Square in Ukraine’s capital – was uploaded by an anonymous user. The origin of the recording has remained unclear.

‘No Safe Haven’: Obama Declares Airstrikes on Islamic State ‘Wherever It Exists’

Source: http://rt.com/usa/186840-obama-islamic-state-address/

http://fedgeno.com/links/

https://www.facebook.com/global.paradigm.shift

President Barack Obama on Wednesday outlined his plan to authorize broader US military involvement for hunting down the fighters of the notorious Islamic State jihadist group in Iraq, Syria and “wherever they exist.”

In a public address to the American people, President Obama announced that the US will “conduct a systematic campaign of airstrikes against these terrorists.”

“I have made it clear that we will hunt down terrorists who threaten our country, wherever they are,” Obama stated. “That means I will not hesitate to take action against ISIL in Syria, as well as Iraq. This is a core principle of my presidency: if you threaten America, you will find no safe haven.”

The president’s strategy in Syria will also be to support opposition forces, and he again called on Congress to give the US government “additional authorities and resources to train and equip these fighters.”

“In the fight against ISIL, we cannot rely on an Assad regime that terrorizes its people; a regime that will never regain the legitimacy it has lost. Instead, we must strengthen the opposition as the best counterweight to extremists like ISIL, while pursuing the political solution necessary to solve Syria’s crisis once and for all, “ Obama said.

To ensure that the Syrian opposition fighters are trained and equipped well enough to hold the ground liberated from the Islamic State terrorists, at least $500 million in a Department of Defense program are stipulated in a $5 billion Counterterrorism Partnership Fund request, according to the White House.

In the meantime, President Obama’s strategy in Iraq will be to support the Iraqi government ‘s fight against the Islamic State (IS), as Iraqis will be the ones to ultimately defeat the group in their country, he said. “Working with the Iraqi government, we will expand our efforts beyond protecting our own people and humanitarian missions so that we’re hitting ISIL targets as Iraqi forces go on offense,” he said.

Obama also announced he is sending another “475 service members to Iraq to support Iraqi and Kurdish forces with training, intelligence and equipment. “

“These service members will join the several hundred American service members sent to Iraq in June to assess how best to support Iraqi Security,” he added. The plan, however, still does not involve “American combat troops fighting on foreign soil,” the president said.

Instead, the military campaign will be boosted and waged “through a steady, relentless effort to take out [the Islamic State] wherever they exist using our air power and our support for partner forces on the ground.”

The US President emphasized that he will not hesitate to take direct military action against terrorists in Syria and Iraq to “degrade ISIL’s leadership, logistically and operational capability, and deny it sanctuary and resources to plan, prepare and execute attacks.”

Murder and Migration in Honduras: Immigrant America

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

Last summer, Americans were stunned by images of children and families from Central America turning themselves in at the US-Mexico border. More migrants are now coming from the Honduran city of San Pedro Sula and surrounding areas than anywhere else in Central America. The society there has yet to recover from a 2009 coup that crippled the economy and unleashed extreme levels of violence and inequality.

In our latest episode of Immigrant America, VICE News traveled to San Pedro Sula — the most violent and second largest city in Honduras — to find out why so many families and young people are risking it all to migrate illegally to the US.

Amphibious warfare is treacherous; moving a military force from sea to land can turn mistakes into disasters. As the US military begins to focus its attention on the Asia-Pacific region, an area of increasing military tension and territorial disputes, the Marine Corps is being called upon to return to its roots in amphibious assault. VICE News visited RIMPAC, the world’s largest maritime warfare exercise, to see how the Marine Corps is testing new technologies and tactics to face the new challenges of amphibious warfare and remain the world’s preeminent amphibious force in the future.

Peshmerga Fighters Reclaim Ground from Islamic State: The Battle for Iraq (Dispatch 7)

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

Until the US stepped in with airstrikes, the Islamic State’s rapid advances threatened the Iraqi Kurdistan capital of Erbil, and seemed set to dash the Kurdish peshmerga’s reputation as fearless warriors. With American warplanes circling overhead and constantly striking Islamic State positions, the front line quickly stabilized, and the peshmerga slowly began to recover ground. Now the scene was set for battle, and the recapture of the strategic Mosul Dam.

VICE News travelled with a Kurdish official to Khazer, near Mosul, and towards the front line of the fight between the Islamic State and peshmerga fighters.

Yazidi Refugees Escape Islamic State Fighters: The Battle for Iraq (Dispatch 6)

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

Members of Iraq’s Yazidis sect follow an ancient religion, which incorporates elements of Islam and indigenous beliefs. After the Islamic State overran parts of northern Iraq, tens of thousands of Yazidis were forced into the Sinjar mountain range, where Islamic State militants — who consider the Yazidi devil worshippers — surrounded them.

President Obama claimed on August 14 that the US military intervention in Iraq broke the siege of the trapped Yazidi civilians in the Sinjar mountains. But the Yazidi themselves disagree. Instead, they are adamant that they owe their rescue from the surrounding Islamic State militants to the Syrian Kurdish fighters of the People’s Protection Units (YPG). The YPG has been fighting the Islamic State longer and harder than any other group in Syria, and pushed a narrow escape route deep through Islamic State territory to rescue the Yazidis.

VICE News travelled through the desert corridor to ascertain the true story of the Yazidis’ last minute escape from the Islamic State.

The Islamic State (Full Length)

WATCH NOW: Embedded with Al-Qaeda in Syria – http://bit.ly/2ynOxnn

The Islamic State, a hardline Sunni jihadist group that formerly had ties to al Qaeda, has conquered large swathes of Iraq and Syria. Previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the group has announced its intention to reestablish the caliphate and has declared its leader, the shadowy Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as the caliph.

The lightning advances the Islamic State made across Syria and Iraq in June shocked the world. But it’s not just the group’s military victories that have garnered attention — it’s also the pace with which its members have begun to carve out a viable state.

Flush with cash and US weapons seized during its advances in Iraq, the Islamic State’s expansion shows no sign of slowing down. In the first week of August alone, Islamic State fighters have taken over new areas in northern Iraq, encroaching on Kurdish territory and sending Christians and other minorities fleeing as reports of massacres emerged.

VICE News reporter Medyan Dairieh spent three weeks embedded with the Islamic State, gaining unprecedented access to the group in Iraq and Syria as the first and only journalist to document its inner workings.

Undocumented and Underage: The Crisis of Migrant Children

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

Between October 2013 and May 2014, authorities at the US-Mexico border began detaining underage migrants at an alarming, never-before-seen rate. During this period, thousands of underage migrants ended up in Customs and Border Protection (CBP) detention facilities along the border.

Capacity at CBP detention facilities was overwhelmed by the influx of migrants, who predominantly came from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. As overcrowding became more severe, conditions for the migrants worsened. Lacking proper installations and sufficient personnel at the facilities, Department of Homeland Security officials began to release underage migrants into the custody of family members in the US, and cited them to attend immigration hearings at a later date.

The situation is similar in Mexico. The flow of underage migrants in the border region has increased rapidly, and shelters for child migrants report that the Central American population they care for now outnumbers the population of Mexican children.

VICE News travelled to the border between Texas and Tamaulipas to speak to people who have been detained on both sides of the border. They told us about their reasons for crossing the border, how they were detained, what their stay was like inside the detention centers, their plans for the future, and their fears.

Now migrants have two options: return to their country, where they could be killed by gang-related violence, or attempt to enter the United States again, hoping that their luck will change, and they will achieve their American dream.

Elsewhere in territory it has held for some time, the Islamic State has gone about consolidating power and setting up a government dictated by Sharia law. While the world may not recognize the Islamic State, in the Syrian city of Raqqa, the group is already in the process of building a functioning regime.

VICE founder Suroosh Alvi travels to Mexico to see the effects of cartel oil theft firsthand.

Mexico’s notoriously violent drug cartels are diversifying. Besides trafficking narcotics, extorting businesses, and brutally murdering their rivals, cartels are now at work exploiting their country’s precious number one export: oil.

Every day as many as 10,000 barrels of crude oil are stolen from Mexico’s state-run oil company, Pemex, through precarious illegal taps, which are prone to deadly accidents. Pemex estimates that it loses $5 billion annually in stolen oil, some of which ends up being sold over the border in US gas stations. As police fight the thieves, and the cartels fight each other, the number of victims caught in the battle for the pipelines continues to climb.

The Crude Gamble of Oil by Rail: Bomb Trains

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

It’s estimated that 9 million barrels of crude oil are moving over the rail lines of North America at any given moment. Oil trains charging through Virginia, North Dakota, Alabama, and Canada’s Quebec, New Brunswick, and Alberta provinces have derailed and exploded, resulting in severe environmental damage and, in the case of Quebec, considerable human casualties.

A continental oil boom and lack of pipeline infrastructure have forced unprecedented amounts of oil onto US and Canadian railroads. With 43 times more oil being hauled along US rail lines in 2013 than in 2005, communities across North America are bracing for another catastrophe.

VICE News traveled to the Pacific Northwest to investigate the rapid expansion of oil-by-rail transport and speak with residents on the frontline of the battle over bomb trains.

Last week, a Malaysian passenger jet was shot down over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board. It has yet to be confirmed who shot it down, but US and Ukrainian officials have blamed the pro-Russia rebels.

VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky is in the Luhansk region with the Ukrainian military to see what, if anything, has changed in the conflict after the plane disaster.
