Can El Salvador Be Fixed? (Extra Scene from ‘El Salvador’s Gangs)

Watch “Gangs of El Salvador (Full Length)” –

El Salvador is set to eclipse Honduras as the country with the highest homicide rate in the world. By the end of September 2015, there had been around 5,000 murders this year, in a country with a population of just over six million. El Salvador’s murder rate is now the highest it’s been since the end of the country’s brutal civil war — there is on average one murder an hour.

El Salvador’s youth have been hit especially hard by the plague of gang violence in the country. Gangs are recruiting younger and younger members, and 88 percent of schools have issues with gangs. Teenagers face forced recruitment, and many see their friends join for fear of suffering at the hands of the gangs.

In this extra scene, VICE News correspondent Danny Gold speaks with students at the University of El Salvador about the gang problem and what they see as a potential solution, as well as with USAID representatives working in high-risk neighborhoods to keep kids out of gangs.
