Trump’s Rally Over Juneteenth Weekend Was No Match for Black People in Tulsa

The Black community in Tulsa, Oklahoma, reclaimed Juneteenth weekend this year. This was after a rally that many saw as President Donald Trump’s attempt to make the historically significant weekend about himself. As racial tensions in the U.S. reach heights they haven’t seen since the 1960s, Trump announced he would be holding a campaign rally in a city in which white supremacists leveled and massacred a thriving black community nearly a century earlier.

Some Tulsans saw Trump’s move as one aimed at inciting violence on a day that would normally be reserved for the celebration of freedom for Black people. After canceling the local Juneteenth festival because of COVID-19, local leaders decided to hold it anyway, partly in response to Trump’s rally, but mainly to show a spirit of unity in the face of what they perceived to be hate and division.
