Taiwan’s ruling party took a huge hit in mid-term local elections Saturday, a significant blow to President Tsai Ing-wen, as the Beijing-friendly opposition made gains in the face of China’s increasing pressure on the island.
When Taiwan goes to the polls Saturday in local elections, it will not only be a test for President Tsai Ing-wen’s embattled government but a crucial vote on divisive issues that could rile China.
Soft-spoken and naturally shy, Taiwan’s first female leader President Tsai Ing-wen is not an obvious trailblazer for women’s rights. But after taking over a party once seen as chauvinist and defying sexist critics, she calls on other women to shrug off self-doubt and be “brave” in the #MeToo era.
Taiwan troops stage live-fire exercises fending off an attempted invasion from its east coast, as the island’s main threat China steps up pressure on President Tsai Ing-wen.
Taiwan showcased its military capability with a live-fire demonstration in front of President Tsai Ing-wen. The drill in the southern county of Pingtung, simulated an attempt by Chinese forces to land on the shores of southeastern Taiwan, as part of the annual Han Kuang war games. US-built Apache and Black Hawk assault helicopters took part in the exercises for the first time.
