A Texas man has been put to death over the rape and murder of a college student over two decades ago – a crime that Larry Swearingen insisted he did not commit.
Prosecutors say they are certain that Swearingen was responsible for the murder. They argue there are ‘mountains of evidence’ demonstrating his guilt – including, for instance, bits of the victim’s clothing that were found in his trailer.
He had also asked a fellow inmate to write a letter to his lawyer purporting to be the ‘real’ killer. Swearingen also had a track record of violence against women.
Despite that, his defence claimed that there were discrepancies in the prosecution’s chronology – and that, on that basis, he could NOT have been responsible. They also alleged that the clothing in the former electrician’s trailer may have belonged to someone else. Moreover, that the blood found under the victim’s fingernails didn’t belong to either her or Swearingen.
