How The World’s Deadliest Pandemics Are Born: VICE on HBO, Full Episode

Somewhere in the world, an unknown virus is growing in the bloodstream of an animal, just waiting to jump to the human population.

Since the 1980s, outbreaks of infectious diseases have more than tripled worldwide. For example, one million people die each year from mosquito-borne illness. And with rising temperatures and population growth, the death toll will likely grow. To stay ahead of a potentially devastating global pandemic, scientists have come up with new ways to research and learn about diseases.

Ron Fouchier, a physician who studies genetic mutations at the Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands, genetically modified the H5N1 bird flu virus to become airborne. “So now we can find out exactly what it takes for an animal virus to become airborne,” he told VICE News.

Fouchier’s work originally sent shockwaves through the international community, but global health experts have found that diligent surveillance and research of these diseases is the key to keeping them at bay.

“Human beings are only as strong as our weakest surveillance system,” Larry Brilliant, a physician who helped eradicate smallpox, told VICE News. As Chairman of the Skoll Global Threat Fund, his work now focuses on using mobile data to track outbreaks. “This is one instance where ‘America First’ means working with the poorest countries in the world to protect them out of selfishness, our own enlightened self-interest.”

Uganda, where the Zika virus was first discovered in 1947, already uses a decentralized network of hospitals, laboratories, and motorcycle riders to keep scientists up to date on medical anomalies, which allows them to quickly contain emerging threats.

VICE founder Suroosh Alvi went to the Zika Forest and Kampala, Uganda, to see how vulnerable humans are to a new pandemic and the options for staving one off.

Remnants Of California Wildfires & ‘Catholicism’s Breitbart’: VICE News Tonight Full Episode (HBO)

October 18, 2017, FULL EPISODE of VICE News Tonight on HBO.

Inside Catholicism’s Breitbart, the site ‘Church Militant,’ as founder Michael Voris is targeting liberal priests

Chinese Communist Party began its 19th Party Congress, bringing 2,300 delegates together. President Xi Jinping is expected to be re-elected as party leader for another five years. VICE News looks at how Gen Secretary of the Communist Party of China, Xi Jinping, has changed the party and country.

In the California neighborhood of Coffey Park, nearly every house has already burned to the ground. Instead of rows of homes, there’s now a forest of charred chimneys standing in piles of ash. And now that there’s nothing left to burn, recovery workers are beginning the search for anyone who didn’t make it out alive.

Plus, VICE’s Suroosh Alvi tries on a mech suit in South Korea.

We Tested Method 2, A Hulking Robot Straight Out Of Science Fiction (HBO)

VICE founder Suroosh Alvi recently traveled to Gunpo, South Korea, to try out the Method 2 prototype, a hulking manned robot made by Hankook Mirae Technology. Weighing in at over one and a half tons, and standing 13 feet tall, the Method 2 looks like something out of science fiction.

Specifically, this exoskeleton robot looks like something you’ve seen in a movie, and that’s by design: Hankook Mirae Chairman Yang Jin-Ho and his team collaborated with a Hollywood designer to make the Method-2.

Jin-Ho spent $200 million of his own money on the project, and claims his creation is the world’s first manned bipedal robot.

The robot is designed to mimic hand and arm movements, and is suspended by two metal cabals in the ceiling to keep it balanced.

So far the Method-2 is only used for fun, but its creator envisions it will play a critical role in future crises.

“It’s more likely it’ll be used in fires and disaster relief situations,” Jin-Ho said. “But also find application in military operations.”

VICE Founder Suroosh Alvi Investigates Life Under Sharia Law – VICE on HBO

In Aceh, Sharia rules all. In this Indonesian province, hardliners began enforcing Islamic law in the wake of the devastating 2004 tsunami that killed more than 200,000 people, telling the survivors that it was the wrath of God punishing them for their sins. Today, Sharia police roam the streets busting gamblers, drinkers, and adulterers, and sending them off to be publicly caned by “executioners.”

VICE founder Suroosh Alvi travels to Aceh and across Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim country, to experience Sharia up close and investigate its correlation to terrorism, as well as meet those who are fighting back against it.

Maduro Forces Are “Killing Us” Says Wife Of Detained Opposition Leader (HBO)

Overnight in Venezuela, two opposition leaders, Antonio Ledezma and Leopoldo Lopez, were abducted from their homes in brazen raids by police, just two days after President Nicolas Maduro consolidated power in heavily disputed national elections.
It’s exactly the sort of state-sanctioned political suppression many feared would come to pass if Maduro no longer had any checks against him.

This Week On The Line (Trailer): Suroosh Alvi Discusses “Homegrown Radicals”

On Thursday at 12pm EDT Suroosh Alvi (@surooshalvi) will join On The Line to discuss his new piece, “Homegrown Radicals”: http://bit.ly/1ENaYA4

After last year’s “lone wolf” attack on parliament hill, and reports that at least 130 Canadian citizens are involved extremist activities abroad, Canada has been forced to address extremism within its borders. In response, Canada’s Conservative government introduced a controversial anti-terrorism bill, which some fear will only further marginalize the country’s Muslim population.

VICE founder Suroosh Alvi traveled to Calgary — labeled a “hotbed of terrorism” by Canadian media — to investigate allegations of radicalization among the city’s Muslim youth. On Thursday, Suroosh will join On The Line to take your questions.

VICE News and On The Line want to hear from you! Let us know your questions for Suroosh on Twitter with the hashtag #ontheline, or send us a video message on Skype.

Why are Canadians Joining the Islamic State? – Homegrown Radicals

Canadian authorities have reported that at least 130 citizens are involved extremist activities abroad, with 30 in Syria alone. In Calgary, five youths who attended the 8th & 8th Musallah mosque are known to have joined the Islamic State, leading the Canadian media to emphatically label Calgary a hotbed of terrorism.

In response to two so-called “lone wolf” attacks last year, Canada’s Conservative government introduced controversial anti-terrorism legislation, which some fear will only further marginalizethe country’s Muslim population. VICE founder Suroosh Alvi traveled to Calgary to investigate allegations of radicalization among the city’s Muslim youth, speaking with the imam of the 8th & 8th Musallah, as well as the mother of Damian Clairmont, who died in Syria fighting for the Islamic State.

Cambodia’s aggressive anti-trafficking campaign is designed to rescue and rehabilitate sex workers. But many women say authorities in Cambodia are actually forcing them into a trade where conditions and pay are even worse: making clothing for Western brands.

VICE founder Suroosh Alvi traveled to Phnom Penh to speak with former and current sex workers, officials, and labor organizers to investigate what is happening to those swept up in the country’s trafficking crackdown.

Mexican Oil and Drug Cartels: Cocaine & Crude (Full Length)

Watch more here: http://bit.ly/2wMCWhh

VICE founder Suroosh Alvi travels to Mexico to see the effects of cartel oil theft firsthand.

Mexico’s notoriously violent drug cartels are diversifying. Besides trafficking narcotics, extorting businesses, and brutally murdering their rivals, cartels are now at work exploiting their country’s precious number one export: oil.

Every day as many as 10,000 barrels of crude oil are stolen from Mexico’s state-run oil company, Pemex, through precarious illegal taps, which are prone to deadly accidents. Pemex estimates that it loses $5 billion annually in stolen oil, some of which ends up being sold over the border in US gas stations. As police fight the thieves, and the cartels fight each other, the number of victims caught in the battle for the pipelines continues to climb.
