The longest-serving Soviet-era leader, Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev, has stepped down, leaving behind a three-decade-long era that has shaped the country into what it is now.

Nazarbayev held the presidential post since 1990 after serving as prime minister in the Soviet Republic of Kazakhstan. This makes him the longest-serving post-Soviet head of state, and until recently, the only one who hadn’t changed since the USSR broke up.

Ukraine: Former church houses Soviet-era space museum

Inside a traditional Orthodox church topped with a gold cross, instead of icons, visitors can see a lunar rover and the helmet of the first man in space Yuri Gagarin. The 19th-century wooden church in central Ukraine is one of thousands of buildings that were repurposed or simply destroyed during an anti-religion campaign in the Soviet era, and has been the home of the “Space museum” since the 1970s.

Soviet Era Classic Cars Drive Through Moscow

(21 Jul 2018) A colourful parade of classic cars took place in Moscow on Saturday morning. The parade, which was followed by a rally through central Moscow, was in its fifth edition and as many as 133 crews driving classic Soviet-era cars participated. (July 21)

Drone buzzes last Soviet-era nuclear missile base in Lativa

Drone footage captures the last Soviet military nuclear base in Latvia, outside of Gulbene, ahead of its demolition. The mainly underground, nine storey Dvina R-12 base is equipped with a nuclear-proof bunker system. The work on dismantling the four bunkers, each 32 metre (104.9 feet) deep along with a command and control centre for launching nuclear missiles, has already begun.
