Cantwell In Court & 3D Chess Masters: VICE News Tonight Full Episode (HBO)

This is the November 10, 2017, FULL EPISODE of VICE News Tonight on HBO.

VICE News reports on how a small Texas town coped with a 1980 church shooting. Rodrigo Duterte is causing turbulence in the South China sea. Asylum seekers refusing to leave an Australian detention center have been told “force may be used.”

Plus, does it really take a genius to play 3D chess? And if so, is Donald Trump really playing?

Rodrigo Duterte decided to appease China this week by scrapping construction on a newly formed sandbar in the South China Sea. According to Philippine Defense Secretary, the military “tried put some structures near Philippine-occupied island, the Chinese reacted” and Duterte said, “let’s pull out”.

Asylum seekers refusing to leave an Australian detention centre told to relocate or ‘force may be used’. They have two days to leave the site. It’s been more than a week since food, power and water supplies were cut off.

Then, VICE News gives an examination of 3D chess, both as a political metaphor and a board game.

Here’s why so many nations want to control the South China Sea — and what China wants to do

The South China Sea plays an outsized role in international commerce and politics. A litany of regional and global powers crave its natural resources as well as the benefits that come with controlling on of the world’s most important shipping lanes.

China has aggressively pursued control over the Spratley Islands — an archipelago of rocks, reefs and cays that sit in the middle of the sea. Malaysia, Brunei, The Philippines, Vietnam and Taiwan have staked their own claims to the area, but it’s really the United States Navy that stands in the way of China. The Seventh Fleet, however, cannot keep China from reclaiming land on the islands it controls.

Professor Dave Denoon, director of the NYU Center on US-China Relations explains how the situation arose and how it will likely play out in upcoming years.

China’s Plans For The South China Sea (HBO)

China is reportedly considering a change to its maritime policy: it would require foreign submarines to surface and fly their national flag while in Chinese waters, including the South China Sea.

That could have a significant impact on American forces, because the U.S. Navy maintains at least four forward-deployed attack submarines in the area.
