Making Saturday Night Live Funny For Everyone (Not Just Black People) (HBO)

Sam Jay is one of SNL’s newest staff writers, but she hasn’t had one of her sketches air yet. She’s also working on how she can introduce her own unique voice into the broader SNL tradition. “Like urban culture stuff, gay culture stuff…women stuff, that they may not necessarily have their pulse on,” she says. “Just who I am, you know what I mean?”

Kenan Thompson remembers this feeling. He’s been on SNL for 15 seasons, making him the longest-serving cast member in the history of the show, but he still remembers how nervous he was when he started.

He also remembers when the show wasn’t nearly as diverse.

Dexter Thomas met up with Sam Jay and Kenan Thompson in New York to hear about the challenges of making Americans – all of them – laugh.

When Kenan Thompson Started At SNL, He Thought He Was Ruining The Show (HBO)

If you want to know about SNL, you’d better talk to Kenan Thompson.

He’s been doing sketch comedy for most of his life – starting as a child star on Nickelodeon’s All That and Kenan and Kel, and is now the longest-running cast member on Saturday Night Live, clocking in at 15 seasons and counting.

During a segment on VICE News Tonight, Kenan Thompson (and rookie writer Sam Jay) talked about the challenge of making jokes that both appeal to a diversifying America, but also keep the traditional SNL audience laughing.

But we wanted to hear more.

So in this extended interview, Kenan looks back at his career thus far, talking about his feelings of self-doubt when he first joined the show, whether or not it’s time to move on from SNL, and what it would take to revive his infamous “What Up With That” sketch.

Inside The Making of “Brigsby Bear” (HBO)

Brigsby Bear is the endearing movie you need after a long week.

It stars SNL’s Kyle Mooney who plays James Pope, a man who’s only form of entertainment– in fact his worldview– is based on a show called “Brigsby Bear Adventures,” which is, unbeknownst to him, created by his parents (played by Mark Hamill and Jane Adams), just for him.

The show is taken away from him in one, life-changing day.

Realizing the show doesn’t exist in the real world, Mooney’s character rallies his newfound friends to create the final chapter of Brigsby Bear Adventures.

Brigsby Bear premieres Friday, July 28, 2017.

In VICE News’ Storyboard series, creators explain the inspiration and process behind making films. This segment originally aired July 27, 2017, on VICE News Tonight on HBO.
