Japan sorry for forced sterilization after it changed 25,000 people’s lives

Did you know that in Japan between 1948 and 1996 about 25000 people were sterilized under pressure? People with mental disabilities and illnesses, along with those with hereditary disorders, were made to undergo the procedure ‘to prevent the birth of inferior descendants’ according to the eugenics law.

Japan’s government had until recently maintained that the sterilizations were legal at the time. Finally PM Shinzō Abe voiced ‘sincere regret’ telling that surviving victims will each receive ¥3.2m (approx. $28.600) to compensate for their suffering.
