VICE Founder Suroosh Alvi Investigates Life Under Sharia Law – VICE on HBO

In Aceh, Sharia rules all. In this Indonesian province, hardliners began enforcing Islamic law in the wake of the devastating 2004 tsunami that killed more than 200,000 people, telling the survivors that it was the wrath of God punishing them for their sins. Today, Sharia police roam the streets busting gamblers, drinkers, and adulterers, and sending them off to be publicly caned by “executioners.”

VICE founder Suroosh Alvi travels to Aceh and across Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim country, to experience Sharia up close and investigate its correlation to terrorism, as well as meet those who are fighting back against it.

A German court has ruled that a group of Islamists did not break the law when forming a ‘Sharia police force’ in 2014. The group caused public outrage after patrolling a western city in orange vests, instructing residents to abide by the strict Muslim code.

Anti-Islamists Demonstrate in Britain: Hate in Europe

Founded in Germany in 2014, the far-right, anti-Islamic movement Pegida — which stands for “Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West” — has since spread throughout western Europe

On February 28, VICE News traveled to Newcastle in northeast England for the inaugural demonstration of spinoff organization Pegida UK. Demonstration organizers told VICE News that they were mobilizing against the imminent rise of Sharia in Britain — and that they feared a future in which British women were forced to wear burkas on British streets.

A Fugitive and his Family: Escape to the Islamic State

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

Abu Rumaysah, also known as Siddhartha Dhar, is reported to have traveled to Syria with his family after fleeing the UK while on conditional bail. The Islamist convert was one of nine people arrested on September 25 on suspicion of supporting the banned terrorist organization al Muhajiroun.

Two days after his arrest, Rumaysah failed to comply with bail conditions requiring him to hand in his travel documents and instead boarded a coach from London to Paris with his wife and four children, which was reportedly headed for Syria.

After weeks of speculation concerning his whereabouts, Rumaysah posted an image to Twitter showing him posing with a baby and an automatic rifle. He claimed that he had made it to the Islamic State. “What a shoddy security system Britain must have to allow me to breeze through Europe to the Islamic State,” he wrote.

VICE News spent time with Abu Rumaysah before he fled to find out more about his activities in imposing Sharia law in the UK and his views on foreign policy. We also interviewed radical preacher Anjem Choudary, who was arrested on the same charge, and spoke with him about Rumaysah’s exit from the UK.

Fighting the Regime from the Underground: Ghosts of Aleppo (Part 4)

Aleppo is Syria’s largest metropolitan area and a millennia-old commercial capital. Today, however, it is a relative ghost town, threatened by regime bombing from the air and a militant offensive on the ground. For two weeks over the summer, VICE News embedded with the Islamic Front, a coalition of Islamist rebels fighting the forces of President Bashar al-Assad on one hand, and Islamic State militants on the other.

VICE News accompanied the Islamic Front through their underground tunnels, which they use to move through the city and to bomb enemy positions from below. Then we sat in on a Sharia court where even amid the fighting, criminals must answer for their crimes.

Christians in the Caliphate: The Islamic State (Part 4)

Click here to watch Part 1 now: http://bit.ly/1lENvT7

The lightning advances of the Islamic State across Syria and Iraq in June shocked the world. But it’s not just the group’s military victories that have garnered attention — it’s also the pace with which its members have begun to carve out a viable state.

As the soldiers of the Islamic State continue in their effort to build up institutions in the north central Syrian city of Raqqa, the Hisbah, or religious police, are tasked with enforcing a particularly harsh form of Sharia law.

In part 4 of The Islamic State, VICE News visits the Sharia courts where those accused of infractions are sentenced to harsh penalties, including death by crucifixion. But the courts don’t just handle crime. Citizens can bring all manners of complaints, including family disputes, and see the Islamic State’s form of justice doled out.

With unprecedented access, VICE News reporter Medyan Dairieh also visits the section of the court specifically set up for Christians, where the Islamic State discusses its treatment of minorities, and sees a former Armenian Catholic Church that has been converted into an Islamic center.
