Scott Keyes of Scott’s Cheap Flights has amassed millions of points opening credit cards. Here’s how he does it without getting clipped with annual fees.

Following is a transcript of the video:

Scott Keyes: One of the weird things about frequent flyer miles nowadays is that the vast majority of miles are not earned through actually flying. Most miles are given out through credit cards.

My name is Scott Keyes. I’m the CEO and co-founder of Scott’s Cheap Flights.

Really at the end of the day all that matters is the sign up bonus. I’ve gotten hundreds of thousands, millions of miles just via the sign up bonus alone. In order to get the sign up bonus the credit card will say you have to spend x amount of dollars in x amount of time. So let’s say it’s typically something like $3,000 in three months. I’ll put all my spending on that credit card for the first two and a half months and then I’ll set myself a calendar reminder two and a half months after I’ve opened up that card and I’ll check my statement at that point.

How much have I spent on there? Let’s say I’ve only spent $2,000. I’m not going to go out just to blow a thousand dollars in the next two weeks just hit the spending threshold. What I can do is actually just send my wife $1,000 over PayPal. You pay a 3% fee to do that so you’re going to pay 30 bucks.

That puts $1,000 in spending on your credit card and all of a sudden you’re at the $3,000 threshold. You get those 50,000 miles for $30 extra than you would have spent.

Typically though you really want to focus on making sure you’re putting all your spending on that new card to hit that spending threshold. Credit card companies are necessarily going to like hearing this but once I hit that spending threshold that credit card is going in the drawer and I’m just going to go on to the next one.

And then I’ll set myself a calendar reminder so that 11 months after I’ve opened up that card, pull up my calendar in the morning, gives me a note. Oh snap, you need to call Citibank and be like, “Hey, you know I’ve really enjoyed using this card but the annual fee is just a little bit too rich for my blood. Can you waive it for the next year?”

Sometimes they’ll say yes. Sometimes they’ll say no. If they say no, that’s unfortunate, can we downgrade to a no-fee card? And doing that helps preserve your credit score a little bit because it maintains the credit line that you have open there. And you’ve saved yourself the hundred bucks or whatever the annual fee might have been.

I hate paying annual fees. Why should I pay for credit cards? There’s so many out there, so many good ones. It’s not something I like to do and try to avoid it whenever possible.

How To Get The Most Money And Perks If You Get Bumped From A Flight

Scott Keyes of Scott’s Cheap Flights loves getting bumped on a flight because it puts him in a great spot for negotiating a deal. Here he explains how to get the most out of getting bumped. Following is a transcript of the video.

Scott Keyes: I love getting bumped from flights. And the reason why I love getting bumped from flights is it puts you in an amazing bargaining position.

My name is Scott Keyes. I’m the CEO and co-founder of Scott’s Cheap Flights.

You know, especially after the recent news controversy, that really tough to watch videos from that United flight, airlines want to do whatever they can to avoid being in the news for that. And so they are much more willing, especially nowadays, to say, rather than just give you $250 voucher they’ll go up to $500. They’ll go up to six, eight, $1,000 really quick. And not only can you get a lot more money, whether in terms of actual refund or voucher from the airlines for being bumped for volunteering, you can also negotiate other things.

So, if I get bumped from my flight back to Portland tomorrow, I’m going to say, “Okay. I’ll do it. I want $1,000 travel credit. I also would like to be put on business class or first class on the next flight to Portland that actually get on, and how about some lounge passes in the meantime so I can hang out and eat and drink while I’m waiting for that flight.”

Believe you me, they will, they’ll play ball if you start negotiating, especially if they’re really pressed They have, like, “We need 5 people to volunteer and nobody’s getting up to volunteer.” You can be in a really good bargaining position.

I can get a flight two hours later, get $1,000 for it. I’ll hang out. I’ll have a beer in the bar, it’ll be great, and I’ll get home a couple hours later, and be $1,000 richer for it. One of the things that I’ll be sure to do, let’s say I volunteer but they actually need two more volunteers as well and they keep having to ratchet up the price.

I’ll tell them, “Look. I’m not doing this unless I get what the other people get.” So maybe they don’t get two more volunteers until they get to $500 voucher. I’ll tell them, “Look. That’s what I want too.”

Even once you’ve already kind of put yourself out there make sure you’re getting the most money possible and return.

Trump’s “moral authority is compromised” says Sen. Tim Scott (HBO)

President Donald Trump has put his fellow Republican politicians in an awkward position after his Tuesday news conference, where he blamed both sides for the violence that occurred in Charlottesville, Virginia, last weekend.

One Republican in an especially awkward spot is Sen. Tim Scott, of South Carolina, the only black Republican in the Senate and one of only 10 black people ever to serve as a United States senator.

In an interview with VICE News on Thursday, he condemned the neo-Nazis and white supremacists who marched in Charlottesville and questioned the president’s moral authority following the tragedy. “I’m not going to defend the indefensible…[Trump’s] comments on Monday were strong. His comments on Tuesday started erasing the comments that were strong. What we want to see from our president is clarity and moral authority. And that moral authority is compromised when Tuesday happened. There’s no question about that.” Scott added that the president hasn’t reached out to him to discuss Charlottesville.

However, the reactions from most other politicians and leaders have given Scott some hope. “Racism is real. It is alive. It is here. But the response from the vast majority of this country is diametrically opposite of the response in the ’60s. We’ve had the United States military, generals, leaders, standing up and rejecting, completely, racism. We’ve had corporate America, which was fairly silent back in the ’60s, standing up very strong, very loud, and very proud.” He continued, “So the response in totality is exactly the opposite of what it was in the ’60s.”

But a senator can only go so far when the leader of his party is the leader of the country. Scott said to accomplish some of his priorities, like tax reform and affordable housing, he has no choice but to work with the president. “I’m gonna work with him wherever we are in agreement. I’m going to speak out against him when we are not in agreement. And that’s the bottom line,” the senator said.

When asked if the president has any political capital to help him achieve some of his policy goals, Scott said, “It is always helpful for the president to have coattails…the president’s coattails are shorter.”
