Colombia fans follow national team to Kazan

Their next World Cup match may be hundreds of kilometres away but that’s not stopping Colombia fans from following their team around Russia. Thousands of supporters are leaving Saransk by train, on a journey of nearly 400km, to reach Kazan, where the side plays Poland on Sunday.

Peter Schmeichel’s big trip across World Cup cities in Russia is nearing its end – and this time the legendary goalkeeper visits Saransk. The city which has a special meaning for the Great Dane, because thats where his nation and his son Kasper will start their journey in the World Cup. So Schmeichel not only went to explore Saransk, but also opened the FIFA football park in the city as an honorary guest – right in front of our cameras.

World Cup Fever: Saransk. Sports lovers’ paradise found in Mordovian mystery town

Diego, Vitaly, and Mukha arrive in the capital of Russia’s Republic of Mordovia, Saransk – a town none of them have ever heard of. They quickly discover the city is home to a huge number of athletic facilities and visit the Mordovia Arena, which is being specially built for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Then, Mukha is inspired to try ice skating for the first time but has an unfortunate mishap. The friends still manage to see the city’s beautiful cathedral square and an impressive sculpture museum

Saransk, in the heart of Russia, is the smallest and least known 2018 World Cup host. One year ahead of kick-off, locals are bullish about the competition, but they have opted to build many a temporary structure — including the airport — to avoid being landed with the usual white elephants once the cup ends.
