Ceausescu auction points to lingering nostalgia among Romanians

A trove of objects from the household of the former Romanian Communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu will go under the hammer in an auction drawing on the enduring fascination his memory holds amid the country’s current political turmoil.

Hundreds of thousands of people have turned out for weeks of protests across Romania. What started as movement against a contentious corruption ordinance has morphed into a call for the resignation of a government seen to perpetuate the rife corruption in Romania. While corruption touches every aspect of society, nowhere is it more present and damaging than in the medical sector. On paper, all Romanians are entitled to free medical treatment under a health care system funded by the State. However the reality is quite different.

VICE News travelled to Bucharest to explore how corruption in the medical profession has fueled the biggest protests seen in Romania since the fall of communism.

Protesters recreate massive Romanian flag as thousands rally at Victory Square

Thousands of Romanians held fast in their unrelenting protest in Victory Square, Bucharest, for the 13th night in a row on Sunday, demanding that the Cabinet steps down, following last week’s withdrawal of a controversial decree that would have decriminalised some cases of official corruption. In a sign of patriotism the crowd used lights to display the Romanian flag.
