Kyle Rittenhouse, the 17-year-old who hit the headlines for killing two protesters at an anti-police brutality demo in Kenosha, is due to appear in court.
The teenager is facing numerous charges, including first-degree intentional homicide and first-degree reckless homicide, for the deaths of Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber. Chaotic scenes from that deadly night in Kenosha show Rittenhouse with self-proclaimed militiamen – allegedly there to protect property and help the police – before opening fire on protesters. He is fighting his extradition from his home state of Illinois to Wisconsin, where the protest took place – and where he would be treated as an adult in legal terms and so could face a life behind bars.
The Rittenhouse case has divided America: some believe he is a hero and patriot who was acting in self-defense, while others believe he is a white supremacist who was looking for trouble. Here’s a look back at the events leading up to this point.
