Researchers prove Leonardo Da Vinci was ambidextrous

Researchers at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence have proved what was suspected for a long time: that Renaissance genius Leonardo Da Vinci was able to write, draw and paint with both hands. The museum’s research and restoration institute confirmed Da Vinci’s ambidexterity by analysing a drawing known simply as Landscape (8P), believed to be his earliest work, dated 1473, when the artist was 21.

Lost painting thought to be by Caravaggio unveiled in London

After two years of restoration, a Renaissance oil painting thought to be by artist Caravaggio, has been unveiled in London. ‘Judith and Holofernes’ is thought to be the Italian painter’s last masterpiece. It depicts the biblical tale of the widow Judith, beheading the Assyrian general Holofernes, to defend her city Bethula. The painting is expected to fetch 120 million euros at auction but its authenticity has divided experts.

Here’s the painstaking, 2-week process that goes into making masks for the Carnival of Venice

Business Insider UK visited three different workshops to see how the masks are made for the world famous Carnival of Venice.

The traditional masks are made in papier maché and are decorated with things like gold leaf, feathers, or gems.

The Carnival of Venice began in the 12th century, it bloomed during the Renaissance period but was disbanded during the late 18th century.

The festival was restored in 1979 and has grown in popularity since then.

Watch the video to see how the masks are made.

Special thanks to workshops La Bottega dei Mascareri, Magie di Carnevale, and Ca’ Macana.

A Rare Leonardo da Vinci Painting Sells For A Record $450 Million

A painting of Christ by the Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci sold for a record $450 million (380 million euros) at auction on Wednesday.

The painting, called “Salvator Mundi,” Italian for “Savior of the World,” is one of fewer than 20 paintings by Leonardo known to exist and the only one in private hands.

The 26-inch-tall (66-centimeter-tall) painting dates from around 1500 and shows Christ dressed in Renaissance-style robes, his right hand raised in blessing as his left hand holds a crystal sphere.

Christie’s says most scholars agree that the painting is by Leonardo, though some critics have questioned the attribution and some say the extensive restoration muddies the work’s authorship.

In New York, where no museum owns a Leonardo, art lovers lined up outside Christie’s Rockefeller Center headquarters on Tuesday to view “Salvator Mundi.”
