Sound In Noise – ’13’

Sound In Noise
Shapes Pt.2
RAMM370

The success of Sound in Noise’s ‘Shapes EP’ on Ram Records saw the Estonian producer once again establish himself as a defining part of the roster’s new wave of artists, those who are bringing in a new era. With support from imperative industry figures such as BBC Radio 1 and US blogging behemoth Your EDM, the follow up has been hotly anticipated after the critical acclaim of its first edition. This November part two is dropping and with it comes four brand new tracks from the producer, the type of which redefine the Sound in Noise style and expose an even wider sonic language.
From the growling patches of static bass peddled throughout ’13’, through to the VIP treatment given to ‘Duppy Bass’, Sound In Noise comes with a host of fresh offerings on the Ram Records moniker. Sitting in between these cuts, ‘Space Cadet’ featuring Jon Hazel gives the EP more dancefloor-centred hooks whilst ‘Magicman’ with its guttural bassline and chiselled drum patches adds another darker undertow. They round off a project which alludes to why Sound in Noise has developed into a fan favourite within the Ram Records roster – following his exclusive signing and succession of high calibre releases on the imprint.

Zeal – ‘Confidence’

Zeal
Azure EP
PRGRAM093

Canadian-born Zeal first came under the Program banner alongside Jake Robertz with single ‘Monster / Check It’, which graduated the newcomer producers onto a groundbreaking underground imprint. Since then, he’s gone on to grace the label’s arsenal of releases with his ‘Yesterday Lanes’ EP and now with another forthcoming package demonstrating his evolution as a artist. Buzzing with emotional energy and proving the passion his has for his art through each painstakingly sculpted part of the track list, the next delivery from Zeal is full of the musical expression which attracted the attention of Program and its team.
The ‘Azure’ EP pulls you into his cross pollination of genres, with the lush tones of its title-track giving a more emotive presence alongside co-producer SkyKnock. ‘Confidence’ rolls across its composition with stabs of shaking synthesis and ‘Say it Now’ follows suit amongst elevating note sequences. Then finishing the collection is ‘Stumble’, pushing forward with a dainty piano lead. Once again, it’s time to get with the ProgRAM, with the Azure EP showing its smoother sounds.

Monument Banks – ‘Coltrane’s Truth’

Monument Banks
Miya Miya / Coltrane’s Truth
PRGRAM092

____

Hailing from the UK, Monument Banks is a drum & bass music producer who’s found himself within the ranks of Ram Records sister-label Program. The 24-year old’s forthcoming single ‘Coltrane’s Truth’ and ‘Miya Maya’ are reasons why he was welcomed with open arms and the technical ability he professes throughout both tracks will make the newcomer a new fan favourite. The release marks his first time on the imprint and it signifies the growing attention he’s beginning to arouse, with Program now acting as its backdrop.
Weaving jazz instruments pepper their way throughout A-side ‘Coltrane’s Truth’, and it boasts an old-school styled edge which is carried forward by its systematic bassline. Meanwhile, the reverse ‘Miya Maya’, comes into play with keyed piano notes alongside tribal-like vocals drifting across the record’s intro. Both tracks pull together another astounding debut from an emerging artist, which is why once again, it’s time to get with the Program. An imprint who always have their ear to the ground for up and coming talent.

Skantia – ‘Pheromone’

Skantia
Pheromone / Dark Matter
RAMM369

____

Little under a year since his exclusive signing to Ram Records, an imprint handling one of the drum & bass genre’s most monumental catalogues, Skantia is slowly growing to be the imprint’s most identifiable new face. With a roster that has spearheaded the label’s expansion and its reputation as a leading figure within dance music, this isn’t an easy feat. His succession of releases after being welcomed onto the Ram moniker have enabled this ascent and following the likes of recent single ‘UV Rays’ and ‘Allure’, Skantia returns with another attention-grabbing release.
Skantia represents the younger breed of artists currently infiltrating club spaces but he’s adding his own twist on current trends. Both ‘Pheromone’ and ‘Dark Matter’ exemplify Skantia’s unique blend; a-side ‘Pheromone’ bodes together a gritty display of hollowed kicks with crackling LFOs. Meanwhile, ‘Dark Matter’ drives forward with a sense of urgency, amongst progressive clanks of percussion and punchy subs. Skantia comes back to Ram with the same intensity he injects into all his releases, alongside an output which is proving to be unstoppable.

Eastcolors – ‘Toys’ VIP

PROGRAM 100: SAMPLER
PRGRAM100

____

The 100th part of Program’s discography is about to drop and with it you’re reminded of a huge part of the imprint’s history, spanning across a colossal number of releases and representing an important section of the drum & bass underground. Split into three parts, Program 100 will realign you with the sounds which gained the international attention which Ram’s sister label now enjoys, having broken away from its counterpart whilst creating its own place within the dance music market. For its first package, you’re given remixes, exclusives and VIPs as part of the Sampler. And these include tracks which have been heralded as this year’s most sought after dubs, by the likes of trend setting players such as UKF and Red Bull.

Marking the first part of its track listing, the growling Skantia rework of LoKo’s ‘Bassline Secret’ will be a welcome introduction for many drum & bass listeners. Ram Records stalwarts Calyx & Teebee then have their take on Legion & Logam’s ‘House of Cards’, before Eastcolors’ ‘Toys’ gets the VIP treatment. Fascad makes his Program debut with ‘Bull’ and Eazy’s ‘Lushen’ oozes with the technical Program vibe. Rounding off the sampler is Glitch City & Night Shift’s ‘Spider’s Web’ and they make their first appearance on Program yet fit perfectly within its ranks, delivering a murkier undertow from their usual offerings. In just six tracks, the label’s team have painstakingly selected music which defines its journey, from its beginnings to now. So once again, it’s time to get with the Program, although this time its for its most expansive sequence to date.

____

‘The Fog’ sees Calyx & Teebee reveal a new facet of their ‘Plates’ project, which now encompasses five records, each highlighting a different chapter of their historic careers that have spanned three decades. From ‘War Dub’ through to ‘The Fog’, there’s a host of styles mastered. ‘The Fog’ is another look into Calyx & Teebee’s huge array of sounds and production techniques, with an unrelenting drive that’s pushed by guttural basses and heaving subs.

Turning their heads away from current music fads and instead staying true to the unique identity that has made them such an identifiable force, Calyx & Teebee’s ‘Plates’ series highlights why they have remained a leading light for Ram Records and its long-standing reputation. The duo is back with the zig-zagging stabs, hypnotic pads and rolling drum breaks of ‘The Fog’; showing that the ‘Plates’ series continues to broaden its breath-taking diversity

NickBee & Mean Teeth – Monumental

Stream/Buy: https://ram.lnk.to/TensionID

____

NickBee has often been heralded as a contemporary architect for the neurofunk subgenre and when looking at the music he’s released throughout his career in drum & bass it’s clear to see why. With its cutting, animalistic basslines and maintained chaos his sounds have infiltrated some of the genre’s biggest labels within its underground scene and one of these imprints has been Ram Record’s sister-label Program.

This is where he’s due to drop his next release, the double-sided single ‘Tension Pulse’ and ‘Monumental’ featuring likeminded duo Mean Teeth, who have just as much of a reputation as their innovative counterpart. Whilst ‘Tension Pulse’ platforms the melodies which NickBee conjures delicately his jagged drum work also cuts through. On the reverse, ‘Monumental’ delivers sweeping layers of bass, animatronic vocals and the crunching segments Mean Teeth have added into the mix. With another dynamic team offering music for the label, once again it’s time to get with the Program.

DC Breaks – ‘Concrete Junglist’

Various Artists
RAM Rave EP Pt.1
RAMM368

The forthcoming ‘Ram Rave’ EP is a celebration of the sounds which they’ve spearheaded for over twenty-five years, becoming one of the leading imprints and trend setters within their field. The EP’s first edition, which welcomes mainstay Ram roster artists as well as newcomer producers, will transport its audience to the dancefloors Ram has dominated throughout its evolving history.

Whether that’s at the seminal 02 Academy in Brixton, or to crowds of thousands at Let it Roll Festival and SW4 in London, Ram’s influence over the global clubbing circuit has been undeniable. And the ‘Ram Rave’ EP is demonstrative of that fact, with a host of sub genres catered to, exploring how Ram has cultivated the sounds which make it such a driving force within today’s dance music scene.
DC Breaks ‘Concrete Jungle’ brings epic jungle breaks through a modern-day technique, whilst Mob Tactics pedestal the classic dancefloor vibes which Ram always provide. Dr. Meaker’s ‘Funk Flicks’ is impossible to escape with its bouncing hooks and NC17 & NUSENSE slice through with their patches of tech-laced, wobbling bass on ‘Come Test’. A new addition to the Ram army, Showdown’s ‘Pressure’ adds more melody infused, drum peddled movements, highlighting more of the EP’s diversity. As a collection, it drives straight into the heart of Ram and what has always been at the core of its ethos. That’s to provide music for speaker stacks – something they’ve delivered from the start.
