Upgrade – ‘Thunder’

Upgrade
What It Means / Thunder
RAMM38
___

For Upgrade’s next single on Ram Records, he again explores the full scope of his artistry with ‘What It Means’ and ‘Thunder’. First debuting on Ram as part of their annual compilation series, then moving to his first standalone single on the imprint, he’s now a regular part of its release schedule. With the harder throes of ‘You Got Me’ providing the more dancefloor essence of his production, ‘Thunder’ follows the same vibe whilst ‘What it Means’ focuses more on the vocal-led melodies like his previous single ‘Won’t Hold Back’.

Whilst ‘Won’t Hold Back’ introduced Upgrade’s vocals into the mix, ‘What it Means’ sees him continue this route, with it becoming a defining feature of the track’s musicality. ‘Thunder’, on the other hand, presents the single’s aggressive flip. Together, they deliver a brand-new addition to the Ram catalogue for Upgrade, now a definitive part of its roster.

Few acts showcase drum & bass’s exciting creative scope with the same skillish vibrancy as June Miller.

Since signing to Ram Records a year ago, the Dutch/Anglo duo have locked themselves away in their Utrecht HQ working on a series of mindblowing creations. Deep in sonic solitude, they’ve pushed themselves to whole new levels… As proved by the stunning ‘Empathy’ and ‘Operation Ivy’. Both pivotal tracks on Andy C’s explosively extensive ‘Nightlife 6’ opus, these cuts represent June Miller’s chiselled production skills like never before.

We kick off with ‘Empathy’. Igniting with a surging sense of soul, the unity of timeless synths and spellbinding vocals set a smouldering scene that’s suddenly shattered into gnarled fragments when the drop lands. An overwhelming bass riff scuffs across the blistering breakbeats to create a thunderous groove. Instant riot material, this has been tried and tested by Andy C since the summer, each airing causing unparalleled commotion in its wake.

‘Operation Ivy’ complements the carnage perfectly. A jittering, snake-like roller with deep funk coded into every element, everything about this pristine precision piece is designed to get the floor wriggling. From the crisp digi slap bass to the strident, spacious drum dynamics and textured rhythmic stabs, this is an impeccable example of how measured and meticulous drum & bass production standards are when they’re in the right hands.

Two outstanding cuts from one of the scene’s most forward-thinking, accomplished acts, two representations of how far-reaching and creative drum & bass can be: June Miller have an incredible year ahead of them. And it starts right here.

Salaryman & Covert Garden – ‘Open Your Eyes’

Salaryman
Deeper Groove EP
PRGRAM102
___

Whether it’s been on Ram or the imprints sister-label, Salaryman has increased his visibility as an artist through every high-quality record he’s created. This is something which will continue with his ‘Deeper Groove’ EP on Program, upholding the standard he has presented time after time on both labels, including most recently as part of Program’s seminal 100th release.

With a range of influences stretching from across reggae, trance, funk, hip hop and jazz, Salaryman pulls for each genre whilst offering something different between each of the five tracks. ‘Save Me from Myself’ is woven by softly spoken vocals and stretches of melody, whilst Covert Garden then merges his sounds with Salaryman for ‘Open Your Eyes’, followed by the darker moods of title-track ‘Deeper Groove’. ‘Ocean’ with its keyed piano notes and ‘Soul Relief’ with its sweeping percussive layers finalises the EP. So once again, it’s time to get with the Program – spearheaded one more time by Salaryman and his musicianship

ALB – ‘The One’ Feat. Anastasia

ALB
The One feat. Anastasia / Blame
RAMM382
___

Newcomer producer ALB is one of Ram Records newest signings and he manages to fit flawlessly within the label’s roster with his stripped back, yet musically top-notch sounds. Highlighting the ear that Ram has for fresh talent and signalling the imprint’s direction in taking the genre back to its more underground form, ALB mixes a range of influences to present a mix of light and dark, emotive music.

Providing a double-sided single for his debut, led by ‘The One’ which is peppered with reels of melodic beats, underscored by the vocals of Anastasia, then wrapped up through the murkier moods of ‘Blame’, he demonstrates his penchant for crossing boundaries. Together, they mark the beginning for ALB’s ascent onto the Ram platform, something which will continue throughout the New Year.

Akov – ‘No More’

Akov
No More / Lights Out
PRGRAM101

With one foot placed firmly in Vienna and the other in the UK, Akov has extracted the very best from each scene and injected this into his music. Everything from his production, live presence and persona as an artist is notorious, which has led to him being one of the most renowned newcomers from over the past two years. And it’s since given him a platform through Ram’s sister-label Program. It’s the home of his forthcoming single ‘No More’ and ‘Lights Out’, following his unique release on the Ram Record’s 2020 compilation ‘Troubles’ ft. MC Mota and Urso. Although this time, it’s a return to his no-holds-barred, stripped back sound.

With the plucky, driving energy of ‘No More’ being delivered alongside the upfront, bass-twisting elements of ‘Lights Out’, it’s once again time to get with the Program. Although this time, it’s with Akov taking you into his own design.

SyRan – ‘Telepathy’

Sy:Ran
Telepathy
RAMM377
Stream/Buy:
___

The SyRan brothers made their debut on Ram Records towards the end of 2019. Their ‘Paradigm’ EP brought together three brand new tracks from a relatively unknown pair, proving Ram still stands as a springboard for the careers of many producers.
After the success of their cut ‘Big Rig’ which featured on sister-label Program’s anticipated 100th release, receiving support from the likes of Andy C and A.M.C, they deliver another record for Ram in the form of ‘Telepathy’. A growling, bass-heavy sub-shaker, with jungle rave-stabs and patches of melody, ‘Telepathy’ is another careful selection from SyRan. It highlights how, despite having very little background, they were offered the Ram platform.

Melysma joins Program’s weaponry for an EP which will push him even further under the spotlight. Already picked up by a host of similarly influential labels, he’s now graduated under the Program flag and in doing so, is about to drop four brand new tracks for a package which will prove why he’s suited within the ranks of Ram’s sister-label.

With tracks like the groove-peppered ‘Bad Mind’, amongst the wavering bassline of ‘Let Jah Rise’, Melysma has left no stone unturned for this release. Hailing from London, Melysma channels the cities murky vibes throughout offerings such as ‘Pure Emotion’, given a lift by Kaya on featuring vocals, whilst ‘Under the Influence’, with Oracle MC, continues the down-and-dirty depths of his sub bass.

So once again, it’s time to get with the Program. One that’ll reintroduce you to the grimier side of drum & bass.
