Upgrade – ‘Thunder’

Upgrade
What It Means / Thunder
RAMM38
___

For Upgrade’s next single on Ram Records, he again explores the full scope of his artistry with ‘What It Means’ and ‘Thunder’. First debuting on Ram as part of their annual compilation series, then moving to his first standalone single on the imprint, he’s now a regular part of its release schedule. With the harder throes of ‘You Got Me’ providing the more dancefloor essence of his production, ‘Thunder’ follows the same vibe whilst ‘What it Means’ focuses more on the vocal-led melodies like his previous single ‘Won’t Hold Back’.

Whilst ‘Won’t Hold Back’ introduced Upgrade’s vocals into the mix, ‘What it Means’ sees him continue this route, with it becoming a defining feature of the track’s musicality. ‘Thunder’, on the other hand, presents the single’s aggressive flip. Together, they deliver a brand-new addition to the Ram catalogue for Upgrade, now a definitive part of its roster.

Few acts showcase drum & bass’s exciting creative scope with the same skillish vibrancy as June Miller.

Since signing to Ram Records a year ago, the Dutch/Anglo duo have locked themselves away in their Utrecht HQ working on a series of mindblowing creations. Deep in sonic solitude, they’ve pushed themselves to whole new levels… As proved by the stunning ‘Empathy’ and ‘Operation Ivy’. Both pivotal tracks on Andy C’s explosively extensive ‘Nightlife 6’ opus, these cuts represent June Miller’s chiselled production skills like never before.

We kick off with ‘Empathy’. Igniting with a surging sense of soul, the unity of timeless synths and spellbinding vocals set a smouldering scene that’s suddenly shattered into gnarled fragments when the drop lands. An overwhelming bass riff scuffs across the blistering breakbeats to create a thunderous groove. Instant riot material, this has been tried and tested by Andy C since the summer, each airing causing unparalleled commotion in its wake.

‘Operation Ivy’ complements the carnage perfectly. A jittering, snake-like roller with deep funk coded into every element, everything about this pristine precision piece is designed to get the floor wriggling. From the crisp digi slap bass to the strident, spacious drum dynamics and textured rhythmic stabs, this is an impeccable example of how measured and meticulous drum & bass production standards are when they’re in the right hands.

Two outstanding cuts from one of the scene’s most forward-thinking, accomplished acts, two representations of how far-reaching and creative drum & bass can be: June Miller have an incredible year ahead of them. And it starts right here.

ALB – ‘The One’ Feat. Anastasia

ALB
The One feat. Anastasia / Blame
RAMM382
___

Newcomer producer ALB is one of Ram Records newest signings and he manages to fit flawlessly within the label’s roster with his stripped back, yet musically top-notch sounds. Highlighting the ear that Ram has for fresh talent and signalling the imprint’s direction in taking the genre back to its more underground form, ALB mixes a range of influences to present a mix of light and dark, emotive music.

Providing a double-sided single for his debut, led by ‘The One’ which is peppered with reels of melodic beats, underscored by the vocals of Anastasia, then wrapped up through the murkier moods of ‘Blame’, he demonstrates his penchant for crossing boundaries. Together, they mark the beginning for ALB’s ascent onto the Ram platform, something which will continue throughout the New Year.

SyRan – ‘Telepathy’

Telepathy

Stream/Buy:
___

The SyRan brothers made their debut on Ram Records towards the end of 2019. Their ‘Paradigm’ EP brought together three brand new tracks from a relatively unknown pair, proving Ram still stands as a springboard for the careers of many producers.
After the success of their cut ‘Big Rig’ which featured on sister-label Program’s anticipated 100th release, receiving support from the likes of Andy C and A.M.C, they deliver another record for Ram in the form of ‘Telepathy’. A growling, bass-heavy sub-shaker, with jungle rave-stabs and patches of melody, ‘Telepathy’ is another careful selection from SyRan. It highlights how, despite having very little background, they were offered the Ram platform.

____

Following his set at the seminal Printworks venue in London, Junk Mail returns for 2020 with a brand-new single on Ram Records. After the dancefloor success of previous cuts ‘Lock Stock’ and ‘Lord Terror’, which catapulted him into the drum & bass world after he adopted a new alias from a well-known production duo, his fresh delivery ‘Yellow Jacket’ has already made its way to taste makers, including Ram Records leading figure Andy C.
It’s become a staple within his sets, with electronic guitar strings and an air raid-like siren quickly leading into its first breakdown. It’s a certified intro track. The stabbing epicness of Junk Mail’s production shines through once more with ‘Yellow Jacket’, homing in on the sound which made Ram Records so infamous across worldwide club circuits.

Program’s seminal 100th release has finally dropped and so far, it’s delivered two bodies of work; an array of 54 exclusives through its most recent package as well as a sampler which acted as its prelude. For the next segment, the sister-label of Ram Records is unleashing yet more new music. With it comes a host of reworks, taking classic Program tracks from the imprint’s catalogue and having roster guests add their spin to each selection, following in the wake of their colossal Skantia ‘Bassline Secret’ reboot.
Whilst fellow Russian artist Nais takes on the sounds of Teddy Killerz and Coppa through ‘Jackyl & Hyde’, Legion & Logam’s ‘Afterthought’ is given the deluxe treatment by Gerra & Stone. What follows is Legion & Logam stepping up to give their own version of Gerra & Stone’s ‘L.I.E.S’, Kung’s expert reimagining of Kelle’s ‘Repirator’, Levela taking Wickaman & RV’s ‘Sound Clash’ through his own lens, Subview adding his take on ‘The Truth’ from Stealth with Fats on vocals and Monument Banks making a welcome addition alongside Aperio’s ‘Grey To Blue’. Then to finalise the track list, Zero Zero’s rework of MD ‘Fiction’ and the Sound in Noise mould of Frankee’s ‘Firehorn’ leaves a delicious taste.

Overall, it’s yet another celebration of what the platform has spent nearly a decade creating. So once again… It’s time to get with the Program. One which remains as groundbreaking as ever, 100 releases on.

Smooth – ‘Airpod’

Smooth
Funk Town EP
RAMM374
___

2017 saw Luka Per, also known through his alias Smooth, release his first full ‘Resurrection’ EP on the Ram Records moniker and he follows this after nearly three years with his brand new ‘Funk Town’ EP. He offers the same dancefloor-hooks which have made him so sought after across worldwide clubs and ‘Airpod’ leads alongside thumping kick drums, helping to drive the track forward. Following is the more melodic throws of ‘Grasshopper’ and the jungle inspired breaks of ‘Strictly Vibes’ alongside Dread MC’s vocal call to arms. ‘Funk Town’ is the final delivery, spearheading the grooves which have made Smooth’s production ooze with such danceability. Four new tracks to kick off the New Year, Smooth provides an EP that pays homage to Ram’s recognisable sound.

Smooth – ‘Funk Town’

Halflow – ‘Stumble Riddim’

Halflow
Mud Pump / Stumble Riddim
PRGRAM097
___

Tipped to be one of the new-breed of production forces of 2020, Halflow makes his Program debut with a two-track single underpinning the reasons why. His stripped back, yet masterful sound is one which has already resonated across the underground and this is how he was selected to join Program’s ranks, something that’s expanded to over 100 releases. The sister-label of Ram Records, it’s become a force within its own right, and it’s helped launch many careers, mainly talented newcomers like Halflow.

‘Mud Pump’ gristles with patches of LFO basses while ‘Stumble Riddim’ sits on top of a honed groove, alongside the same growling distortion. So once again, it’s time to get with the Program, delving deep into the underbelly of its catalogue with Halflow.
