Many parents in northeastern Syria, most of which is controlled by Kurdish authorities, are opting to enrol their children in overcrowded state-run schools despite the complex commute.

Syrian Kurds demonstrate against Turkey’s offensive

Syrian Kurds demonstrated Wednesday in in the mainly Kurdish-held city of Qamishli, to denounce Turkey’s offensive against a Kurdish militia in the country. Turkey on Saturday launched operation “Olive Branch” together with Syrian rebels and Turkish warplanes striking targets to oust the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) militia from its Afrin enclave in northern Syria. One person was killed and 13 others were wounded in the Turkish border province of Kilis on Wednesday in rockets launched from Syria, Governor Mehmet Tekinarslan said.

Syria’s state-run news agency has raised the death toll from what it says was a twin bombing that struck a crowd in a predominantly Kurdish town in the country’s north to 44 killed. The report says a truck loaded with large quantities of explosives blew up on Wednesday on the western edge of the town of Qamishli, followed by an explosives-packed motorcycle a few minutes later in the same area.
