In the Trenches With Al Nusra (Excerpt from ‘Inside the Battle: Al Nusra-Al Qaeda in Syria’)

VICE News filmmaker Medyan Dairieh gains exclusive access to the Syrian branch of al Qaeda, al Nusra, a jihadist group fighting against President Bashar al-Assad’s forces and the Islamic State (IS).

Spending more than a month with al Nusra and exploring their expanding territory, Dairieh meets the highest-ranking members of the organization, who reveal their identity on screen for the first time and discuss their military doctrine.

Al Nusra, which swore allegiance to al Qaeda two years ago and is now emerging as a powerful force to rival IS in Syria, has seized several strategic towns in the northwestern province of Idlib. While it supplies water, electricity, and food to the local population, a school run by al Nusra is also grooming young boys to become the next generation of al Qaeda and preparing them for jihad.

VICE News also secures exclusive access to the front lines of the battle for Abu al-Duhur airport in Idlib, a major airbase held by Assad’s forces, besieged by al Nusra for two years. Aided by dust storms during the attack, the airport was the last remaining government stronghold in the region. Dozens of government soldiers were subsequently executed, according to the monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

In this excerpt from ‘Inside the Battle: Al Nusra-Al Qaeda in Syria,’ VICE News follows al Nusra fighters as they launch assaults on the Abu al-Duhur airport, while dodging sniper fire, mines, and President Assad’s warplanes.

Shaping the Future: Al Nusra-Al Qaeda in Syria (Trailer)

In this follow-up to Inside the Battle: Al Nusra-Al Qaeda in Syria, VICE News filmmaker Medyan Dairieh gains exclusive access to al Nusra, the Syrian branch of al Qaeda, which is fighting against President Bashar al-Assad’s forces, the Islamic State (IS) and Kurdish forces.

Allied with the Jaysh al Fatah (Army of Conquest) coalition, and in control of territories stretching across the Aleppo and Idlib provinces, Dairieh meets some of the highest-ranking members of al Nusra. Revealing their identities for the first time, they show how they are providing services to the people living under their rule, and how they join other groups in providing these services.

Spending nearly two months with al Nusra, and exploring their expanding territory, Dairieh meets its first military leader, who explains how al Nusra captured and controls its territories, as well as its military doctrine.

Observing daily life in Aleppo under the group, VICE News visits an al Nusra-run hospital, schools, a fuel market, a power station, a water supply system, prisons, courts, bakeries, and also learns about the surprising ties between communities controlled by al Nusra and the Syrian regime.

Life After Guantanamo: Exiled In Kazakhstan

What happens after detainees are released from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility? The answer to that question has, for the most part, been shrouded in secrecy.

When five former Guantanamo detainees were resettled to Kazakhstan in late December 2014, a senior official in the Obama administration was quoted as saying the ex-captives were now “free men”. But what does that actually mean? VICE News traveled to Kazakhstan to find out.

Abdul Mohammed Rahman, also known as Lotfi Bin Ali, came into US custody in February 2003, accused of having ties to the Tunisian Combat Group and al Qaeda — allegations that Bin Ali has vehemently denied. Still, he was designated as an “enemy combatant” by the US military and was shipped off to Guantanamo, where he was held for 12 years without charge or trial.

In Department of Defense documents released by Wikileaks, Bin Ali was deemed to be of “medium intelligence” value. However, the 2004 intelligence assessment also contained a noteworthy finding, namely that Bin Ali suffered from heart problems, needed serious medical attention and, as a result, was “low risk.” The military recommended that he be repatriated or transferred to the control of another country. Despite the recommendation, Bin Ali was detained at Guantanamo for 10 more years.

Lotfi is still sick, and appears to be getting sicker. His new home in eastern Kazakhstan poses considerable challenges to successful reintegration into society. “Life After Guantanamo” paints a portrait of the challenges of integration and the mysterious circumstances surrounding former detainees’ basic rights and freedoms after being released from Guantanamo.

An Apology to Every Single American (Excerpt from VICE News’ Interview with Michael Morell)

When al Qaeda terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, Michael Morell was with President George W. Bush at an elementary school in Florida as the CIA’s daily briefer. The events that unfolded on that fateful day are just some of the many national security disasters that Morell, the former acting director of the CIA, has been at the center of since 9/11. The veteran intelligence official has spent much of his 30-year career out of the public eye, but he’s stepping out of the shadows to talk about his new book The Great War of Our Time: The CIA’s Fight Against Terrorism — From al Qa’ida to ISIS.

VICE News met with Morell at the Richard Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, California, and spoke with him about the Iraq war, the CIA’s “enhanced interrogation” program, and what he refers to as “the new era of terrorism.”

In this excerpt, Morell admits that the intelligence the CIA produced about Saddam Hussein’s nuclear intentions, which paved the way to war, was flawed. Morell is one of the first CIA officials to come clean about this fact, and to apologize for getting the intelligence wrong.
