Trump’s Dangerous Coronavirus Name Game is Part of a Long, Crazy History

For the second day in a row, President Trump opened a press conference today devoted to an outbreak that has now killed more than 200 Americans without saying the word “coronavirus.” Instead, he substituted his chosen name: “The Chinese Virus.”

Other Republicans are also racing to rebrand the virus that causes COVID-19. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has called it “Chinese Coronavirus,” while Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar is trying to make “Wuhan Virus” a thing. One White House official even allegedly referred to the global pandemic as “Kung-Flu.”

The World Health Organization intentionally avoids this, and advises against any possible nickname for a disease that calls up people, places, groups, or even professions, because those names can create a stigma. Even the Trump-appointed director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Robert Redfield, told the House in a hearing that using location-specific labels for the virus is “absolutely wrong and inappropriate.”

There is a long, inglorious history of naming diseases after disdained groups. In 1495, Russians called a syphilis outbreak the Polish Disease, the Polish called it the German Disease, and the French and Italians named it after each other. The 1918 flu pandemic that infected over a quarter of the world’s population is still referred to as “The Spanish Flu,” even though there is no consensus on where that outbreak originated. Spain just happened to have the most reliable reporting at the time, as other countries censored their press to boost morale during World War I. Because Spain reported the first illness-related death, it got stuck with the name.

What It’s Like To Have A Famous Far-Right Sibling And Disagree With Them (HBO)

Politics can create deeply awkward Thanksgiving dinners for many American families, but for these guys, politics is actually tearing their families apart. Dave and Tim Gosar were so appalled by the public positions of their brother, Arizona Congressman Paul Gosar, that they appeared in an ad for his political opponent. Curtis Ingraham is the brother of Fox News host Laura Ingraham. He says they used to be so close they could finish each other’s sentences; now he denounces her hot takes on Twitter.

“Are you supposed to stand by your family no matter what they do? ‘Oh, hi Paul, other than demonizing immigrants and trying to take away our healthcare… how’s it going?” Dave Gosar said. “Let’s agree to disagree about taking babies from their parents at the border…Pass the turkey!”

Curtis’ sister was just parodied on Saturday Night Live. He said Kate McKinnon captured his sister’s mannerisms beautifully, but he’s unsettled by what the parody symbolizes. “Someone asked me: is that your sister or is she playing a personality?” Curtis said. “I think that is her now, that’s who she has become.”

VICE News brought the three of them together in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, before the midterm elections, to talk about what it’s like to experience a very common family drama on a national stage.

Meet The Congressman Who’s Blocking His Constituents Online (HBO)

Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar suggested the participants in the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville in August may have been organized by an “Obama sympathizer” and funded by George Soros, whom Gosar accused of having “turned in his own people to the Nazis.”

Gosar made these comments — and there is no evidence backing these theories — to VICE News in an interview about one of his constituents who is suing him in federal court for blocking her on his official Facebook page. The constituent, J’aime Morgaine, argues that Gosar is violating her First Amendment right to engage in debate in a virtual public forum.

The congressman justifies blocking Morgaine and hundreds like her by pointing to the attempted assassination of Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise. Scalise, a Republican, was shot at a congressional baseball practice in June by a homeless man who belonged to left-wing Facebook groups. Hateful comments on social media, Gosar said, could lead to violence. Gosar is a Republican. Morgaine made critical comments on his page from a liberal perspective.

This segment originally aired Thursday, October 5th on VICE News Tonight on HBO.
