Intolerance After The Violence: Paris Gun Attack (Dispatch 4)

Terrorism has aggravated anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and social segregation across France. VICE News correspondent Milène Larsson travelled to Paris to see how the attacks on the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and a kosher supermarket in early January have impacted its disparate communities.

Larsson meets the French branch of controversial political organization Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West (PEGIDA), which has gained support across Europe on the back of its anti-Islamization rhetoric. She also visits a Jewish school in Paris under heavy security, and speaks to activists from Muslim Students of France about the stigmatization of young muslims. Finally, she travels to the Paris suburb Villiers-sur-Marne — where a girlfriend of one of the attackers once lived — to find out what pushes young people towards radicalization.

France Grieves for Charlie Hebdo: Paris Gun Attack (Dispatch One)

The first week of 2015 turned tragic when three masked gunmen stormed the Paris offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo killing 12 people, including some of France’s most prominent cartoonists, and injuring many more. Despite the perpetrators remaining at large, and France raising its terror alert to the highest level, more than 100,000 people across France took to the streets in solidarity with the victims of the country’s worst terror attack in decades.

VICE News went to Place de la République following the attack, where grieving Parisians from all groups of society have gathered. We spoke to people who either knew the cartoonists personally, were fans of Charlie Hebdo, or were attending to stand up for freedom of expression in the face of deadly intimidation tactics.

Gun Attack on French Satirical Magazine: This Just In

A manhunt is underway in Paris, where earlier today three masked gunmen attacked the offices of French satirical magazine ‘Charlie Hebdo’. At least 12 people were killed, including the magazine’s editor and two police officers.

‘Charlie Hebdo’ has been the target of violent attacks in the past due to its satirization of the Prophet Muhammed. French President François Hollande said the country is in shock following what he described as “undoubtedly” a terrorist attack.

A Fugitive and his Family: Escape to the Islamic State

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

Abu Rumaysah, also known as Siddhartha Dhar, is reported to have traveled to Syria with his family after fleeing the UK while on conditional bail. The Islamist convert was one of nine people arrested on September 25 on suspicion of supporting the banned terrorist organization al Muhajiroun.

Two days after his arrest, Rumaysah failed to comply with bail conditions requiring him to hand in his travel documents and instead boarded a coach from London to Paris with his wife and four children, which was reportedly headed for Syria.

After weeks of speculation concerning his whereabouts, Rumaysah posted an image to Twitter showing him posing with a baby and an automatic rifle. He claimed that he had made it to the Islamic State. “What a shoddy security system Britain must have to allow me to breeze through Europe to the Islamic State,” he wrote.

VICE News spent time with Abu Rumaysah before he fled to find out more about his activities in imposing Sharia law in the UK and his views on foreign policy. We also interviewed radical preacher Anjem Choudary, who was arrested on the same charge, and spoke with him about Rumaysah’s exit from the UK.
