The day after Italian police rescued 51 schoolchildren who had been taken hostage on their schoolbus, parents want answers as to how the bus driver, who doused the vehicle in petrol and set it alight, was given his job. Driver Ousseynou Sy, a 47-year-old Italian citizen of Senegalese origin, carried out the hijacking apparently in protest at migrant deaths in the Mediterranean.
Bus driver transporting schoolchildren stopped his vehicle on a highway near Milan on Wednesday before telling passengers to get off and setting the vehicle on fire.
12 students and two adults have reportedly been taken to hospital over inhalation concerns.
The driver, 47-year old Ousseynou Sy, was detained after one student managed to alert authorities, according to reports. Sy has reportedly shouted “I want to end it, deaths in the Mediterranean must stop” before setting fire to the vehicle.
