Why Elijah McClain’s Mother Doesn’t Have to Speak Out, One Year After His Death

It has been one year since Elijah McClain was put into a chokehold by police officers, injected with ketamine, and sent to the hospital, where he later died. Elijah’s mother, Sheneen McClain, was previously vocal at protests. But she now says that she will not speak publicly until she has received justice for her son. In her stead, community organizers have stepped in to speak for her – while also making sure that the fact that the McClain family is still mourning Elijah is respected.
