Then we head to Nairobi’s National museum where the bone structure of a previously unknown prehistoric carnivore has been rediscovered in the bowels of the museum – a long-forgotten discovery in this treasure trove of a museum.

Elephants: endangered gentle giants outside Nigeria’s megacity | AFP

Just 100 kilometres (60 miles) from downtown Lagos, Omo Forest is home to an estimated 100 forest elephants, shy relatives of their larger savannah cousins. But the survival of this rare species is hanging in the balance, threatened by rampant deforestation in their natural habitat.
