Merging a huge spectrum of creative talents, this next EP from Culture Shock dissects not only his music but also his persona as an artist. Encompassing both his self-made, mechanical artwork as well as the diverse soundscape he reigns over, it’s easy to see the depth of his creativity.

The four track EP demonstrates his classical training, one which served as the perfect backdrop for his intricate composition, driving from a range of influences… Something he’d soon become renowned for. From the legendary status of ‘City Lights’, which this year received the ‘Record of The Day’ status at Radio1, to the resounding riddims of heavy-hitters ‘Troglodyte’ and ‘Ohrwurm’, his output has not only been eclectic but steadily gaining momentum too.

Opening track ‘Back to You’ has lined the sets of dancefloor’s heaviest hitters this summer. Whether it’s on sold-out stages of the drum & bass capital at SW4, or sets across the Atlantic with support from Andy C and Sub Focus, the anticipation around its release has been invading cyberspace. Pounding subs underpin a soulfully reimagined vocal sample, which peaks between the ebb and flow of structured note arpeggios. A warped bassline beneath elevated note patterns add an extra stockiness allowing the record to detonate any club, whilst still leading you into the emotive crescendo of dancefloors worldwide.

Rolling out next is ‘Tangents’. Ethereal, humanistic elements weave between snapping hi-hits and loops of synth, gradually building to manifest something more menacing. With a melody that only goes to pedestal an outstanding ingenuity, you pound against steely distortion, one which reverberates between each segment.

‘Rush Connection’ yet again stands as a testament to Culture Shock’s honed craft, whilst being distinctive stylistically. A chiselled groove acts as a starting point, snipped up by slants of sample and served as a dynamic riddim to take you into any late night session. Then lastly, comes ‘Steam Machine’, peddled by kick drums and an incredibly chiselled bassline… Pulling together an EP whose announcement is set to ricochet across the industry. It’s an explosive finish.

Adding the fourth track to an already expansive discography, this extension of Culture Shock’s repertoire will only further push him into the spotlight. And with yet more sonic crafts already in the works, his true potential is only just being uncovered.

ANDY C: “City Lights is classic, timeless DnB from Culture Shock. One of the most in demand tracks I’ve ever played!”

Culture Shock’s ‘City Lights’ (featuring Bryn Christopher) is one of the most anticipated drum & bass records of the past few years.

Signed to RAM and now with a joint release via Virgin Records – a relationship which has given the world crossover hits from Sub Focus and Wilkinson – this is tipped to become the anthem that cements Culture Shock’s reputation as a name to watch in 2015 (a sentiment echoed by UKF, and Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, MistaJam and Friction over at Radio 1).

The instrumental version has achieved near legendary status on forums and social media, with just a handful of DJs, including RAM’s label head, Andy C, in possession of only several copies in circulation. Now with a vocal from Bryn Christopher, who made his mark with I See MONSTAS, ‘City Lights’ is set to go from fabled club track to airwave anthem, its uplifting, melodic style striking a chord with clubland’s class of 2015.

An underground favourite, Culture Shock aka James Pountney, boasts a gold-plated reputation earned from productions like ‘Protection’, ‘Ohrwurm’, ‘Raindrops’, and ‘Troglodyte’, coming to wider recognition thanks to collaborations with Sub Focus and Brookes Brothers, alongside features on genre-leading compilation series Dimensions and Nightlife. A consistent production talent, he’s shown the kind of flair that’s caught the attention of figures such as Chase & Status, DJ Fresh, Sigma, Wilkinson, High Contrast, and beyond, with recent remixes for Crystal Fighters, Seinbao Sey, and Moko, joining previous rerubs for Nero and Netsky.

Miami Music Week: THE most important gathering in dance music since time began. An essential sun-kissed calendar date for artists, industry influencers and enthusiasts alike… Whatever your genre persuasion, if you’re serious about the dance then Miami welcomes with you open arms. David Beckham’s not the only Brit taking over Miami this winter!

Ram Records have represented at this annual meeting of musical minds since day one. Cutting through dance music’s ever-changing fads and flavours with their demonstrative D&B message, they have achieved a rock-solid standing as the most important drum & bass event there. With over a thousand parties happening throughout the event — from VIP pool parties to the epic multi-arena beast Ultra — Ram have worked hard to create this sterling reputation.

This year will be no exception: the label have secured another session at Mekka. One of Downtown Miami’s most desired venues, it will be home to RAMiami with a line-up that reads like a who’s who in D&B: Andy C, Ed Rush & Optical, Wilkinson, Loadstar, Rene LaVice and Delta Heavy.

To celebrate, they’ve curated ‘RAMiami 2014’. Just like their Mekka mission, it’s an all-star cast that represents the broadest scope and most vibrant colour of drum & bass. It’s yet another reminder of how extensive and timeless Ram’s repertoire truly is.

Showcasing drum & bass’s unique melting pot with depth and clarity, every possible style can be enjoyed on ‘RAMiami 2014’: The spine-melting euphoria of Loadstar’s ‘BLVD’. The dreamy melodic textures of Culture Shock’s ‘Ohrwurm’. The grizzle-bass badness of Noisia’s ‘Façade VIP’. The ludicrous rudeness of Roni Size’s ‘Hotness’ remix. The organic instrumentation of Sub Focus’s ‘Flamenco’. The savage steel drum of Moving Fusion’s ‘Chilli Pepper’… The list goes on.

No Ram album is complete without exclusives, too. And amongst this explorative 16 track tale you’ll find three next-level specials that are unavailable anywhere else. Recent Drum&BassArena Artist Of The Week Salaryman dusts his jazz piano and slinky double bass off for ‘My Future’. Mob Tactics, meanwhile, deliver the dark and devious ‘Joe Mangle’. Boasting multi-faceted bass textures and a switch-flipping dynamic on the drop, it’s one of the duo’s best tunes to date. The third exclusive comes from Bluescreens. Last spotted on Ram’s ‘RAMsterdam 2013’ album, here we find them developing their full-throttle audio adventure ‘Strike One’ with a spectacular second part. Flexing a muscular bassline and raw, pummelling drums, it’s a fittingly dramatic finale to yet another exciting, extensive Ram collection.

Miami wouldn’t be the same without Ram’s heavyweight presence. Both their Mekka line-up and this collection of exclusives and timeless classics show exactly why.

Chase & Status Loadstar, Mind Vortex, Optical, Zeds Dead, El Hornet, Specrtrasoul, S.P.Y Calvertron, Chords, Shock One, Crissy Criss, Drumsound, EastColors, Rene LAvice, Futurebound, High Contrast, Nu Tone, Doc Scott, TC, Dillinja, Sub Focus, Ed Rush, Taxman

Culture Shock – Ohrwurm

Available to buy now: http://bit.ly/RAMM106

Having made his Ram debut in 2006, it’s been an exciting half-decade for James Pountney. While ‘The Bypass’ smashed onto dance floors and into DJs’ record boxes as part of Ram’s ‘Dimensions’ series Culture Shock was instantaneously secured as a name to watch.

Several collaborations with Brookes Brothers, a succession of smashing solo hits and an outstanding remix for Nero’s chart smash ‘Guilt’ later and Culture Shock continues to amaze anyone with a keen ear for beautifully produced and effortlessly unpretentious D&B. Infused with progressive electro-house influences and steeped in gentle melodies that stick in your head, Culture Shock is a master of balancing dance floor friendly production and magnificently simple musical elements.

Proving that statement true on the A side of the latest Ram single is ‘Protection’ is an effortlessly beautiful track that takes Culture Shock trademarks to the next level. Slowly evolving and changing throughout, this tune takes you by the hand and leads you slowly, but surely, to the dance floor. Expertly crafted synths toy with a signature bassline and this one will undoubtedly have people captivated when it drops.

Backing that up is ‘Ohrwurm’ – or ‘Earworm’ for those who don’t speak German! Literally translated, this phrase refers to a portion of a song which gets stuck in your head. And boy does this track do that! Simple yet highly effective synths spring across a swing beat rhythm and bouncing bass notes creating a monster that’ll have clubs jumping til the early hours. This is another outstanding Ram 12″.
