How One Company Makes Accessible Vehicles For People Who Use Wheelchairs

AT Conversions customizes vehicles to make them more accessible for people who use wheelchairs. They turned the head-turning gull-wing door into a functional design. The converted vehicles give people who use wheelchairs more options when they are purchasing a new vehicle.

The following is a transcript of the video:

Narrator: AT Conversions customizes vehicles for a good reason. It turns popular trucks and SUVs into wheelchair-accessible vehicles. The conversion process works on a variety of makes and models so customers have a broad range of options. The most eye-catching option? The gull-wing door. It takes 25 seconds for the lift to expand or retract. AT Conversions’ mission is to make wheelchair-accessible vehicles that people want to drive. It can customize a vehicle’s passenger or driver side, and accommodate manual or powered chairs. Customers also have the option to keep the manufacturer’s seats. Here’s how the vehicles are converted.

When a vehicle arrives at the shop, it’s lifted 3 inches to accommodate a lowered floor, which allows the wheelchair to fit inside the vehicle. The original flooring of the vehicle is cut out and the frame is modified to make room for the newly lowered floor. Now an employee can install the lift pan and gull-wing door hinge while another modifies the door to fit the new configuration. Employees paint the new floor and the area near the door to match the rest of the vehicle. They install the hydraulic lift and wire everything to work with a remote control. The interior is put back together. The door is then attached and employees put the final touches on the vehicle. The entire process takes about six weeks.

The vehicles give people who use wheelchairs more freedom. Clint Lindemann, a quadriplegic, has a YouTube channel where he shows users the adaptive equipment he uses for hunting and fishing. His converted truck helps him get around more efficiently than a van.

Clint Lindemann: Since I’ve gotten this pickup, I’ve been able to do a lot more hunting and fishing. All my free time is spent driving around the outdoors of North Dakota, looking for deer and finding spots to set up bow stands and rifle hunts. The benefits, of course, of having a four-wheel-drive pickup in North Dakota is, by far, you can go anywhere pretty much. My van in the past was always breaking down. With the two-wheel drive in North Dakota, it was tough being around sometimes with it here, especially in the winter months.

Narrator: AT Conversions’ vehicles start at $30,000.

Sex and the Oil City: The dark side of North Dakota’s oil boom (RT Documentary)

In 2006, the Parshall Oil Field was discovered in North Dakota, and oil companies joined a frenzied rush to extract the black gold. Thousands of oil workers moved in to take high-paying jobs in the industry. Unusually high incomes, boredom and long working hours in a mostly male environment combine to create the perfect marketplace for traffickers selling sex and drugs. Incidents of road death and domestic violence have also risen dramatically.

Photographing America’s Next Pipeline Fight in the Swamps of Louisiana

On a hot day in the middle of March, photojournalist Emily Kask, 23, found herself on a tiny metal crawfishing boat, deep in the swamps of southern Louisiana. The humid bayou was a long way from Standing Rock, North Dakota, where she had traveled just a few months earlier to cover the massive protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline, but her goal was the same. Kask had already spent weeks in Louisiana documenting the people and places caught up in another anti-pipeline fight. In this case, her work meant tagging along on a day’s worth of crawfishing.

VICE News went along for the ride.

The Crude Gamble of Oil by Rail: Bomb Trains

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

It’s estimated that 9 million barrels of crude oil are moving over the rail lines of North America at any given moment. Oil trains charging through Virginia, North Dakota, Alabama, and Canada’s Quebec, New Brunswick, and Alberta provinces have derailed and exploded, resulting in severe environmental damage and, in the case of Quebec, considerable human casualties.

A continental oil boom and lack of pipeline infrastructure have forced unprecedented amounts of oil onto US and Canadian railroads. With 43 times more oil being hauled along US rail lines in 2013 than in 2005, communities across North America are bracing for another catastrophe.

VICE News traveled to the Pacific Northwest to investigate the rapid expansion of oil-by-rail transport and speak with residents on the frontline of the battle over bomb trains.

Derailed Oil Tanker Cars Catch Fire in Virginia: This Just In

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

15 tanker cars of a CSX Corporation train derailed Wednesday afternoon in downtown Lynchburg, Virginia while carrying crude oil, according to a statement by the company. No casualties have been reported yet, but the accident sent flames and billowing black smoke into the air, and oil is leaking into the nearby James River, officials said. Emergency crews have evacuated seven buildings and 300 people in the surrounding area. It is unclear what exactly caused the train to derail.

This is the latest in a series of freight train accidents that have led to spilled crude oil in the past year, including major derailments in Alabama and North Dakota. According to the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, more than 1.15 million gallons of crude oil was spilled in the US in 2013 alone — which is more than twice the amount that was spilled in the previous four decades.
