Abstr4ct – ‘Overflow’

Abstr4ct – ‘Overflow’

The RAM crew first knew Abstr4ct’s presence back in 2013 with his remix of Loadstar’s ‘Dr. Karg’ from their ‘Future Perfect’ LP, which also featured on Andy C’s ‘Nightlife 6’ compilation. Honing his craft since then, the Brazilian producer debuts two original works on ProgRAM.

‘Busy’ doesn’t give you much time to introduce itself: an electro synth note rises then collapses into a snarling, growling bassline. It comes underpinned by minimalist percussive elements and guttural, pitched down vocal snippets. ‘Overflow’ keeps things pared down to the basics – a stripped back roller. The bass and atmospherics do most of the work here, creating a deep cut with a techy edge.

Harvesting talent is something ProgRAM prides itself upon and Abstr4ct is definitely one to keep an eye on. ‘Busy’ and ‘Overflow’ provide further evidence that it’s all about getting with the ProgRAM.

Few acts showcase drum & bass’s exciting creative scope with the same skillish vibrancy as June Miller.

Since signing to Ram Records a year ago, the Dutch/Anglo duo have locked themselves away in their Utrecht HQ working on a series of mindblowing creations. Deep in sonic solitude, they’ve pushed themselves to whole new levels… As proved by the stunning ‘Empathy’ and ‘Operation Ivy’. Both pivotal tracks on Andy C’s explosively extensive ‘Nightlife 6’ opus, these cuts represent June Miller’s chiselled production skills like never before.

We kick off with ‘Empathy’. Igniting with a surging sense of soul, the unity of timeless synths and spellbinding vocals set a smouldering scene that’s suddenly shattered into gnarled fragments when the drop lands. An overwhelming bass riff scuffs across the blistering breakbeats to create a thunderous groove. Instant riot material, this has been tried and tested by Andy C since the summer, each airing causing unparalleled commotion in its wake.

‘Operation Ivy’ complements the carnage perfectly. A jittering, snake-like roller with deep funk coded into every element, everything about this pristine precision piece is designed to get the floor wriggling. From the crisp digi slap bass to the strident, spacious drum dynamics and textured rhythmic stabs, this is an impeccable example of how measured and meticulous drum & bass production standards are when they’re in the right hands.

Two outstanding cuts from one of the scene’s most forward-thinking, accomplished acts, two representations of how far-reaching and creative drum & bass can be: June Miller have an incredible year ahead of them. And it starts right here.

Mob Tactics – ‘Dreamworld’

Mob Tactics
‘Dreamworld / Convoy’
Released 31st August
Ram Records
RAMM331

Mob Tactics are no strangers to the Ram Records discography. Having already been brought on board for Andy C’s ‘Nightlife 6’ instalment and Audio’s seminal ‘Ramlife’ compilation, with their exclusives ‘Wolf Trap’ and ‘Frenzy’, they’re set to return although this time they’re offering a standalone single on the imprint. ‘Dreamworld’ and ‘Convoy’ highlight how Mob Tactics appeared on Ram’s radar; primarily because of their dancefloor appeal and indisputable production levels. The duo have become a formidable part of drum & bass sets across the global circuit and with a single on Ram within their reach, they’re looking to reinforce their stronghold.

This two-track release gives different insights into the skills Mob Tactics have at their disposal. Explosive, yet still crafted with the upmost precision, both ‘Dreamworld’ and ‘Convoy’ are intrinsically underground whilst adhering to Ram’s high-reaching standards. ‘Dreamworld’ begins as you’d expect from a Mob Tactics record – with its crashing percussive breaks and zipping, heavyweight bassline, the track’s weightiness becomes apparent between each refined layer. Next, you’re introduced to ‘Convoy’, which differs from its forerunner through its use of synth and more uplifting undertones. The range offered up on each track shows how Mob Tactics have continued to test their limits, which is why they’re a perfect addition to the Ram Records catalogue.

2018 has seen many artists make guest appearances within the label’s roster and Mob Tactics make a welcome return. Ram still dominates the scene twenty five years on from its inception.

ANDY C: “City Lights is classic, timeless DnB from Culture Shock. One of the most in demand tracks I’ve ever played!”

Culture Shock’s ‘City Lights’ (featuring Bryn Christopher) is one of the most anticipated drum & bass records of the past few years.

Signed to RAM and now with a joint release via Virgin Records – a relationship which has given the world crossover hits from Sub Focus and Wilkinson – this is tipped to become the anthem that cements Culture Shock’s reputation as a name to watch in 2015 (a sentiment echoed by UKF, and Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, MistaJam and Friction over at Radio 1).

The instrumental version has achieved near legendary status on forums and social media, with just a handful of DJs, including RAM’s label head, Andy C, in possession of only several copies in circulation. Now with a vocal from Bryn Christopher, who made his mark with I See MONSTAS, ‘City Lights’ is set to go from fabled club track to airwave anthem, its uplifting, melodic style striking a chord with clubland’s class of 2015.

An underground favourite, Culture Shock aka James Pountney, boasts a gold-plated reputation earned from productions like ‘Protection’, ‘Ohrwurm’, ‘Raindrops’, and ‘Troglodyte’, coming to wider recognition thanks to collaborations with Sub Focus and Brookes Brothers, alongside features on genre-leading compilation series Dimensions and Nightlife. A consistent production talent, he’s shown the kind of flair that’s caught the attention of figures such as Chase & Status, DJ Fresh, Sigma, Wilkinson, High Contrast, and beyond, with recent remixes for Crystal Fighters, Seinbao Sey, and Moko, joining previous rerubs for Nero and Netsky.

Culture Shock
1: Raindrops 2: Troglodyte VIP

Pre-Order: http://po.st/CultureShockRaindropsiT

Culture Shock has remained a withstanding name inside the realms of drum & bass. After a succession of pounding solo hits and an array of remixes which garner just as much power, it’s no surprise James Poutney is still a key player within the genre half a decade on.
And this next release from Culture Shock needs little introduction. Featuring the greatly sought after ‘Troglodyte VIP’, showcased on Andy C’s proclaimed Nightlife 6 series, there’s also a fresh new offering which boasts of his well-pedestalled credentials.
‘Raindrops’ acts as a perfect starter, reintroducing you to the bass-rooted artwork which Culture Shock manifests with absolute precision. It certainly makes a statement on impact, with warming synths that know how to take a track into different breadths of sound. Cool, refreshing yet stimulating with each electronic pulse, it’s named aptly as you’re unable to detach yourself from its strident melody. Effortlessly sophisticated, he establishes a hook ensuring ‘Raindrops’ doesn’t lack the heavier elements which underpins his composition. A signpost detailing that Culture Shock is back, this record firmly reasserts the producer as a bassline trend-setter.
Rolling out next is the reimagining of Troglodyte, one of the most rocketing dnb anthems to step out of the last five years. You already know the skull-cracking impact of its predecessor, but now it’s time for a different sequence of peddled madness. With diced up vocal snippets continuing to play an important role in its hard-lined conveyer belt of production, there’s now a fluctuation of note patterns opening up a different perspective. However, it takes the same path, leading to a drop which continues to ricochet after it’s first fired and bares it’s teeth just as aggressively.
Culture Shock nods to past and present with this next release, revamping a contemporary classic, whilst demonstrating longevity on new tracks like ‘Raindrops’. Continuing to make new ground, this end of year release signals big things to come… It’s definitely a move to watch closely!

Hamilton – Echoes

Released 15th August — Pre-order — RAM Shop – http://bit.ly/_RAMM102

Hamilton might seem like a relatively new name on the block to some, but this versatile and talented producer has been making electronic music for over fifteen years. Having conquered several genres and worked as an international DJ for a decade and a half, the next step in Hamilton’s story was after sending some of his D&B tracks to Ram boss Andy C.

Taking things on an epic and melodic tip, Hamilton shows his diversity with ‘Echoes’, a track that harks back to the golden era of drum & bass and was a highlight on ‘Nightlife 5’. Like a modern day PFM, Hamilton effortlessly combines twinkling musical elements and warm synthetic pads with crisp breakbeats and a rolling flow that’s undeniable. This one will see many a dance floor through to 4am with raised hands and smiling faces.

DC Breaks AKA DJ Samurai and DJ Kryptik have been on RAM Records’ radar for a long time now, releasing tracks for sister label Frequency including the gorgeous ‘Pickett Line’ in 2009 (recently given the VIP treatment for Andy C’s Nightlife 5 vinyl projects) and already enjoying a high level of support at radio by Annie Mac, Zane Lowe, Pete Tong, Mistajam and Bailey. They have now exclusively signed to RAM, with this single as their first release.

And what a stunning debut! For ‘The More I Want’, DC Breaks are at their euphoric best with soft percussions, melodic strings, infectious vocals, the whole grounded by a deep bassline.
