Barred from the Ballot Box: Disenfranchised in New York

In this year’s US presidential election, there will be 6 million people banned from the ballot box because they have felony convictions. Almost half of these people aren’t currently incarcerated, and are taxpaying citizens who are on parole or probation. In New York, felons get their voting rights back after they complete parole, but those with life on parole will never be able to vote again.

VICE News spends time with Steven Johnson, a man who has a parole life sentence, as he educates his fellow parolees about their voting rights, and is fighting to get the law changed in New York.

Break – Winter Rain

Released Friday 18th March.

This March Intrigue Bristol celebrates 13 years of hard work in the game with a brand new compilation, Intrigue 13. The third instalment in their annual compilation series features productions from Break, Random Movement and a whole host of Intrigue friends and family.
After the success of Intrigues 11 and 12 the third instalment continues the tradition of containing one track for each year in the game. It’s a warm sunshine filled album that effortlessly showcases the diversity of the drum and bass sound with productions from established names like Break, Random Movement and Roygreen and Protone as well as promising cuts from up and comers like Lurch and New York based producers, Ian M and Raw Q. The track Ninth Avenue also features samples recording in New York on (you guessed it) Ninth avenue.

No Intrigue album would be complete without some choice productions from the Intrigue family themselves with Ben Soundscape and The Insiders bringing four cuts to the table including a Mark System remix of their track, Pathways and even an appearance from top vocalist Collette Warren. A solid third chapter in the series and not one to be missed.

On The Line: Avi Asher-Schapiro on Cop Watch

Follow us on Twitter (https://twitter.com/vicenews) where we’ll announce the next topic for On The Line.

VICE News journalist Avi Asher-Schapiro (https://twitter.com/aaschapiro) joined On The Line to discuss his new piece about Cop Watch.

Over the past year-and-a-half, police violence in places like New York, Baltimore, and Ferguson grabbed headlines, sparked mass protest, and drove down public confidence in law enforcement to a 22 year low. In response, people across the country have been fashioning makeshift uniforms, arming themselves with cameras, and patrolling streets to document police misconduct. It’s an explosion of a movement that has been around for many years. This is Copwatch.

Covert – Exhaust

A good amount of you guys who are here from the subscriber feed or from Reddit / Facebook might not have heard of Covert yet. Covert is a very young EDM talent based in New York. He gained his first bit of deserved recognition in 2014 when one of his Neurofunk tracks was reposted and even uploaded on the official DnB SoundCloud account, hosted by The EDM Network. Eventually, said track “Dépêchez-Vous” attracted the likes of Neurofunkgrid, and from that point – he has been a Neuro producer that I have had my eyes on sharply. This kid has got some serious technical skill, and he knows how to make the human body move with his drums. This is a track he released for free on his SoundCloud before his rise to “fame” (2014).

Weapons Grade is a channel for uploading only the most forward thinking and stomping underground Neurofunk. I will try my best to promote only the truly under-appreciated tunes that go lesser heard. Uploads will probably be daily, or possibly even more frequently. Every track featured here has been purchased from the respective label, and is in 320 kbps (MP3) quality before upload. All artwork in every video is from http://www.wallhaven.cc/ unless otherwise stated! I won’t feature any track on this channel that isn’t advanced Neurofunk and I will never monetize a video. This channel is purely for your entertainment and discovery, and for my hobby. I hope you guys enjoy thoroughly!

If there is a problem with any of the tracks uploaded, please consult at me at my email (found on my channel under “For business enquiries”). I will take necessary measures to make content owners satisfied with the state of their track, whether it be on the channel or not. If you wish to submit a track for possible upload, please send it to me via the same email.

The Recovery That Wasn’t: Two Years Since Hurricane Sandy

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

Two years on, tens of thousands of New Yorkers are still suffering from the effects of Hurricane Sandy, some with homes that remain completely demolished.

Many of these residents continue to wait on funding for construction from NYC Build it Back, the program launched by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to allocate the nearly $2 billion in received federal aid. Until recently, the program had exhibited unmanageable bureaucratic problems — as of January this year, there had been no construction under the program.

VICE News spoke with those still suffering from the effects of Hurricane Sandy, and investigated what’s being done to bolster New York’s coastal communities and protect the population from future storms.

Protesters March Against Climate Change: Flood Wall Street

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

Following the massive People’s Climate March in New York on September 22, VICE News spent a day with protesters at the Flood Wall Street direct action demonstration in lower Manhattan, where hundreds gathered to disrupt business as usual and highlight the financial sector’s role in climate change.

The event was also an occasion for activists with the Occupy Wall Street movement to regroup and return to the streets, three years after those protests started.

On Monday, many Flood Wall Street protesters planned to block traffic and continue the disruption until being forcibly removed by police. The demonstration resulted in over 100 arrests.

Undocumented and Underage: The Crisis of Migrant Children

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

Between October 2013 and May 2014, authorities at the US-Mexico border began detaining underage migrants at an alarming, never-before-seen rate. During this period, thousands of underage migrants ended up in Customs and Border Protection (CBP) detention facilities along the border.

Capacity at CBP detention facilities was overwhelmed by the influx of migrants, who predominantly came from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. As overcrowding became more severe, conditions for the migrants worsened. Lacking proper installations and sufficient personnel at the facilities, Department of Homeland Security officials began to release underage migrants into the custody of family members in the US, and cited them to attend immigration hearings at a later date.

The situation is similar in Mexico. The flow of underage migrants in the border region has increased rapidly, and shelters for child migrants report that the Central American population they care for now outnumbers the population of Mexican children.

VICE News travelled to the border between Texas and Tamaulipas to speak to people who have been detained on both sides of the border. They told us about their reasons for crossing the border, how they were detained, what their stay was like inside the detention centers, their plans for the future, and their fears.

Now migrants have two options: return to their country, where they could be killed by gang-related violence, or attempt to enter the United States again, hoping that their luck will change, and they will achieve their American dream.

The Worst Job In New York: Immigrant America

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

Milking cows is a dirty, monotonous job, and as we found out in our latest episode of Immigrant America, it’s not a job many unemployed Americans are willing to do. But for some reason the government doesn’t give dairy farms a way to recruit foreign workers legally, so most feel forced to hire illegal immigrants. This makes the farms and their workers easy targets for immigration authorities looking to fill deportation quotas. We went to upstate New York to try to understand the cat and mouse game going on between dairy farms and immigration authorities. We found a lot of wasted taxpayer money, racial profiling, and a broken system that unnecessarily treats family farmers and hardworking immigrants like criminals.

“Firestorms” over Washington DC: N. Korean propaganda video threatens US attack

http://rt.com/news/north-korea-destroying-america-487/

http://fedgeno.com/links/?q=korea

North Korea has produced a new propaganda video portraying a simulated attack on the White House and the US Capitol Building in Washington DC.

The four-minute video, entitled “Firestorms will rain on the Headquarters of War”, was posted Monday on the YouTube channel of the North Korea’s semi-official central news agency Uriminzokkiri.

A series of shots depicting North Korean soldiers, artillery fire, and military hardware culminate in an image of crosshairs zooming in on the White House. The scene quickly cuts over to images of computer rendered explosions bursting around the dome of the US Capitol building.

“There is no limit to the range of our strategic rockets,” the narrator warns.

The video’s release comes amidst rising tensions between Pyongyang and Washington after the UN Security Council voted to impose harsher restrictions following the North’s third underground nuclear test in February.

On Monday, the US said that every military resource at its disposal, including its nuclear arsenal, would be available to South Korea in the event of a confrontation with the North.

“We remain steadfast to our commitment to extended deterrence offered by the US nuclear umbrella,” US Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter pledged after talks with South Korean Defense Minister Kim Kwan-Jin in Seoul.

“We’ll ensure all of our resources will be available to our alliance.”

Earlier this month, Pyongyang threatened all-out nuclear war with the US and South Korea after the two countries began joint military drills on the Korean Peninsula. The North also nullified the 1953 armistice that ended the Korean War, claiming the drills were preparations for an invasion.

On Saturday, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said the United States plans to deploy 14 additional interceptors along its West Coast in response to what he had previously characterized as North Korea’s “irresponsible and reckless provocations.”

This is not the first time a North Korean Propaganda video has depicted a military strike on the United States.

In February, Uriminzokkiri circulated an internet video showing a skyline resembling New York, up in flames.

“The North’s high-level nuclear test aimed at US invaders is a nuclear deterrent to safeguard our sovereignty,” one caption in the video read.

While an editorial published on the Uriminzokkiri website in February claimed North Korea was in possession of nuclear-equipped long-range missiles capable of hitting the US mainland, nuclear specialists say there is no evidence Pyongyang can construct a warhead small enough to mount on a missile.
