A grand jury decided on Wednesday not to indict NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo for the death of Eric Garner after Pantaleo put him in a chokehold during an arrest in Staten Island on July 17. Protesters put out a call to converge on the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting event to broadcast to the nation that officer involved deaths like Garner’s are unacceptable.

The Recovery That Wasn’t: Two Years Since Hurricane Sandy

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

Two years on, tens of thousands of New Yorkers are still suffering from the effects of Hurricane Sandy, some with homes that remain completely demolished.

Many of these residents continue to wait on funding for construction from NYC Build it Back, the program launched by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to allocate the nearly $2 billion in received federal aid. Until recently, the program had exhibited unmanageable bureaucratic problems — as of January this year, there had been no construction under the program.

VICE News spoke with those still suffering from the effects of Hurricane Sandy, and investigated what’s being done to bolster New York’s coastal communities and protect the population from future storms.

Protesters March Against Climate Change: Flood Wall Street

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

Following the massive People’s Climate March in New York on September 22, VICE News spent a day with protesters at the Flood Wall Street direct action demonstration in lower Manhattan, where hundreds gathered to disrupt business as usual and highlight the financial sector’s role in climate change.

The event was also an occasion for activists with the Occupy Wall Street movement to regroup and return to the streets, three years after those protests started.

On Monday, many Flood Wall Street protesters planned to block traffic and continue the disruption until being forcibly removed by police. The demonstration resulted in over 100 arrests.

Undocumented and Underage: The Crisis of Migrant Children

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

Between October 2013 and May 2014, authorities at the US-Mexico border began detaining underage migrants at an alarming, never-before-seen rate. During this period, thousands of underage migrants ended up in Customs and Border Protection (CBP) detention facilities along the border.

Capacity at CBP detention facilities was overwhelmed by the influx of migrants, who predominantly came from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. As overcrowding became more severe, conditions for the migrants worsened. Lacking proper installations and sufficient personnel at the facilities, Department of Homeland Security officials began to release underage migrants into the custody of family members in the US, and cited them to attend immigration hearings at a later date.

The situation is similar in Mexico. The flow of underage migrants in the border region has increased rapidly, and shelters for child migrants report that the Central American population they care for now outnumbers the population of Mexican children.

VICE News travelled to the border between Texas and Tamaulipas to speak to people who have been detained on both sides of the border. They told us about their reasons for crossing the border, how they were detained, what their stay was like inside the detention centers, their plans for the future, and their fears.

Now migrants have two options: return to their country, where they could be killed by gang-related violence, or attempt to enter the United States again, hoping that their luck will change, and they will achieve their American dream.

The Worst Job In New York: Immigrant America

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

Milking cows is a dirty, monotonous job, and as we found out in our latest episode of Immigrant America, it’s not a job many unemployed Americans are willing to do. But for some reason the government doesn’t give dairy farms a way to recruit foreign workers legally, so most feel forced to hire illegal immigrants. This makes the farms and their workers easy targets for immigration authorities looking to fill deportation quotas. We went to upstate New York to try to understand the cat and mouse game going on between dairy farms and immigration authorities. We found a lot of wasted taxpayer money, racial profiling, and a broken system that unnecessarily treats family farmers and hardworking immigrants like criminals.

“Firestorms” over Washington DC: N. Korean propaganda video threatens US attack

http://rt.com/news/north-korea-destroying-america-487/

http://fedgeno.com/links/?q=korea

North Korea has produced a new propaganda video portraying a simulated attack on the White House and the US Capitol Building in Washington DC.

The four-minute video, entitled “Firestorms will rain on the Headquarters of War”, was posted Monday on the YouTube channel of the North Korea’s semi-official central news agency Uriminzokkiri.

A series of shots depicting North Korean soldiers, artillery fire, and military hardware culminate in an image of crosshairs zooming in on the White House. The scene quickly cuts over to images of computer rendered explosions bursting around the dome of the US Capitol building.

“There is no limit to the range of our strategic rockets,” the narrator warns.

The video’s release comes amidst rising tensions between Pyongyang and Washington after the UN Security Council voted to impose harsher restrictions following the North’s third underground nuclear test in February.

On Monday, the US said that every military resource at its disposal, including its nuclear arsenal, would be available to South Korea in the event of a confrontation with the North.

“We remain steadfast to our commitment to extended deterrence offered by the US nuclear umbrella,” US Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter pledged after talks with South Korean Defense Minister Kim Kwan-Jin in Seoul.

“We’ll ensure all of our resources will be available to our alliance.”

Earlier this month, Pyongyang threatened all-out nuclear war with the US and South Korea after the two countries began joint military drills on the Korean Peninsula. The North also nullified the 1953 armistice that ended the Korean War, claiming the drills were preparations for an invasion.

On Saturday, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said the United States plans to deploy 14 additional interceptors along its West Coast in response to what he had previously characterized as North Korea’s “irresponsible and reckless provocations.”

This is not the first time a North Korean Propaganda video has depicted a military strike on the United States.

In February, Uriminzokkiri circulated an internet video showing a skyline resembling New York, up in flames.

“The North’s high-level nuclear test aimed at US invaders is a nuclear deterrent to safeguard our sovereignty,” one caption in the video read.

While an editorial published on the Uriminzokkiri website in February claimed North Korea was in possession of nuclear-equipped long-range missiles capable of hitting the US mainland, nuclear specialists say there is no evidence Pyongyang can construct a warhead small enough to mount on a missile.
