Nero – Into The Night (Dawn Wall Remix)

Released January 8th on MTA Records.

Ahead of the release of Nero’s third single ‘Into The Night’, the duo production powerhouse have started to share some remixes from the release. First one out the gate is this monstrous remix from the increasingly successful Dawn Wall. The original (which has just had an incredible video produced by Nero’s Dan Stephens) is a banger with one hell of a hook. From that source material, Dawn Wall takes the track into late-night territory with a snarling bass line and a heavy emphasis on the piano line, but it’s the sped-up vocal hook that steals the show and gets the pulse racing. Yet another excellent track from Dawn Wall!

Skankandbass – Top 15 in 2015

Top 15 on YouTube: http://bit.ly/1QPrPaN
Top 15 on SoundCloud: http://bit.ly/1RMbVxY
Top 15 on Spotify: http://spoti.fi/1IwNmSR

In no particular order, here are my favourite 15 tracks of the year:

00:00 Dimension – Whip Slap

It all started with a video on social media causing hype havoc. Undoubtably one of the biggest tracks in drum & bass this year – simple yet highly effective, this one’s been tearing down dance floors worldwide throughout the whole of 2015. Having taken himself to the top competing with some of the best producers in the scene, exciting prospects are in store for Dimension in 2016.

00:17 Noisia & The Upbeats – Dead Limit

A tried and tested winning collab combination. This track was a few years in the making and it was worth it for that reese that kicks in after 48 bars alone. Possessing incredible production and impact, it’s no surprise ‘Dead Limit’ has received heavy rotation throughout Summer and the tail end of the year. It’s a tight one between this and ‘Whip Slap’ as track of the year!

00:35 DRS ft. Jubei – The Puppeteer

DRS is always there to deliver a strand out track. This time partnering up with Jubei, the collaboration has a perfect balance of rolling darkness and a vocal hook which is as catchy as always. One of my favourite tracks to hear dropped in the dance this year – bouncy!

00:48 Lynx – Clap Track

The man who gave us ‘Disco Dodo’ re-introduced the unique style with ‘Clap Track’ – designed for djing, this one’s an absolute hurter once deployed on innocent gurning ravers.

01:11 Xtrah – What Would You Do!?

Another example of simple yet effective – my love for this track is very strong – gunfinger inducer. Xtrah’s had a sensational year and is no doubt now considered one of the best producers in the scene.

01:44 Dawn Wall – Angel Field

Yes, we all want to know who Dawn Wall is/are, but I honestly hope we never find out! Two EP’s on Integral in the bag and a huge impact left within the drum & bass scene. Angel Field and Lose Face are my favourite from the EP’s, but Angel Field just tips it – I can’t wait to hear the debut LP in 2016.

Side note: I commissioned Dawn Wall’s remix for Nero – Into The Night, does that mean I know who they are? Ooooof.

02:17 Break & DLR – Human Error

One word for this one – ‘mixdown’ – jesus fucking christ. I dropped this at The Nest when I was warming up before Spor’s set earlier this year and rest assured, the dance floor turned in to a zoo. So many tracks you could pick from these two producers separately.

02:50 SCAR – Caged

SCAR aka Survival & Script have been churning out some huge rollers on Headz in the last two years. ‘Caged’ is certainly the stand out track which turned heads within the scene. I dropped this in room 2 fabric recently and the system had a bit of a work out. Gunfingers were raised.

03:14 Hive – Repentance

It’s always good to hear new music from Hive and ‘Repentance’ definitely delivered. I love the delay in drop and progression of the track which makes for a wicked listen and journey when experienced on a dancefloor.

03:36 SpectraSoul – Always

SpectraSoul delivered us a sensational and versatile album via Shogun Audio this year – ‘Always’ is definitely my pick of the bunch. Vibe-o-meter hitting a solid 10, I haven’t heard a track like it in a while – very cinematic. Good work chaps.

04:07 LSB – Walking Blues

LSB is one of the best liquid producers hands down. Output has been incredibly strong for Luke in 2016, including ‘The View’ with DRS and Tyler Daley, but ‘Walking Blues’ on his Soul:R EP definitely takes the biscuit for me. INCREDIBLE.

04:31 Joy Orbison – Hyph Mngo (Vandera Remix)

This one surfaced at the start of the year and I’ve been playing it on repeat ever since. Being a big fan of the original, Vandera has done it justice with effortless execution.

05:04 Bomfunk MC’s – Freestyler (Teknian & Zero Zero ft. JFB Remix)

Quite a late addition to the year. Having been a massive fan of the original in my youth, seeing this track title alone got me excited and I’m happy that Teknian & Zero Zero did the original justice with a headsy approach. The intro is a perfect tease in mixes and the drop is very unexpected, yet satisfying! Free download vibes.

05:38 Ivy Lab – Sunday Crunk (Mefjus Remix)

I don’t really need to say much about this one. Absolutely stupid mixdown – with that build up you’re expecting a two step drum pattern, but the half time element and piercing bass create that ‘shock’ element which really turns the dance in to a frenzy.

06:00 Bensley – Next Generation

Bensley came out of no where to drop an LP via Ram Records. Although I’m not massively in to the LP as a whole and I think his production can improve, this track has undeniable musicality which is extremely difficult to dislike. I’m excited to see what this guy’s got lined up in 2016.

Since setting up home in London over a year ago, the ‘Canuck Don of Drum and Bass’ René LaVice continues to break the prototype with his own fresh take on the genre. He’s quickly becoming one of the stand out names in the game, proving his unbridled versatility whilst creating a history of releases that exemplify this talent.

So far his journey has seen him move into the Radio1 A-list, support bass-behemoths The Prodigy, win fans over at Download Festival, be one of the lucky few Drum and Bass DJs to push the genre at Glastonbury Festival 2015, whilst remixing diverse heavyweights such as Nero to Rae Morris and having tracks such as ‘Where My Ladies At’ become one of the most revered records to date within the game. And Rene yet again proves unstoppable with this next release.

One of the most anticipated drum & bass tracks to line sets since its very first play, ‘Air Force 1’ rolls out first. From cyberspace to the clubs, a baying crowd has been awaiting the release of ‘Air Force One’ and René has now delivered. Featuring René himself on vocals and a devilish half-time step intro, this record builds into the first drop and then propels you forward into all-out anarchy… raise up your 1’s people and prepare for G force bass.

Up next is ‘Don’t Look Down’, with vocals delivered by BullySongs in a playful yet powerful record with the trademark René LaVice sonics that we all know and love. Well known for his showmanship, ‘Don’t Look Down’ epitomises what René LaVice is about; tracks that globally detonate dance floors of any size.

René’s multidimensional approach to music making whilst tapping into different tempos is duly noted and with René being no stranger to dipping into a variety of genres ‘Human Safari’ feels like the perfect track to complete this EP. With a brand new groove, ‘Human Safari’ ties the EP together with its dropped BPM, tribal riff and haunting vocals. Originally written whilst watching a documentary on a Human Safari, René once again turns electronic music on its head and delivers a warning shot on how he sees his career continuing to grow.

A stringent prototype was smashed by Rene LaVice’s ‘The Calling’; it was propelled onto Radio1’s A-list whilst crossing the boundary between commercial and underground, pulling in fans from the depths of both audiences. And since his move to London last year, he’s certainly made his mark felt in the world’s drum & bass capital… Both on stage and across the radio airwaves.
‘Hotblooded’ is the next output from Rene, which perfectly follows up the success of its predecessor. A creeping, eerie vocal track which explodes on impact and ricochets throughout, ‘Hotblooded’ yet again exposes his monstrous capabilities as an electronic producer.
The cinematic roller hastily brings you forward on clashing percussion and a distorted reece, creating a conundrum of carefully crafted chaos, but one which Rene’s commands. Perfecting his art, it ingeniously merges a more humanistic element with the smash, crash and reverberating instruments which have given him notoriety.
Then up next is pulsing riddim ‘Bill Folderson’. A snarling slab of bass propped against driving, pounding drum loops, it’s a nasty flipside which pedestals Rene’s spectrum of creativity. Snips of sample separate shaking hi-hats after a resounding break. Compact, yet an intimidating roller, it embodies a murkier side characterised by former productions such as ‘Pipe’ and ‘Freudian’.
Rene is no stranger to dipping into a wide range of genres. With elevating synths and pumping bass, ‘Combustible’ offers up a fresh uptake and clearly points to Rene’s background across an array of styles.
A seismic build up leading into a stomach-lurch drop gives images of packed out club-nights and the late-night atmosphere which this kind of record is renowned for detonating.
So here comes the highly-anticipated next single from Rene LaVice. After the attainment of his last single, and the critical acclamation which was met by remixes from the likes of Nero, The Prodigy and Rae Morris, prepare for the spotlight to be held firmly on Rene for quite some time.

ANDY C: “City Lights is classic, timeless DnB from Culture Shock. One of the most in demand tracks I’ve ever played!”

Culture Shock’s ‘City Lights’ (featuring Bryn Christopher) is one of the most anticipated drum & bass records of the past few years.

Signed to RAM and now with a joint release via Virgin Records – a relationship which has given the world crossover hits from Sub Focus and Wilkinson – this is tipped to become the anthem that cements Culture Shock’s reputation as a name to watch in 2015 (a sentiment echoed by UKF, and Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, MistaJam and Friction over at Radio 1).

The instrumental version has achieved near legendary status on forums and social media, with just a handful of DJs, including RAM’s label head, Andy C, in possession of only several copies in circulation. Now with a vocal from Bryn Christopher, who made his mark with I See MONSTAS, ‘City Lights’ is set to go from fabled club track to airwave anthem, its uplifting, melodic style striking a chord with clubland’s class of 2015.

An underground favourite, Culture Shock aka James Pountney, boasts a gold-plated reputation earned from productions like ‘Protection’, ‘Ohrwurm’, ‘Raindrops’, and ‘Troglodyte’, coming to wider recognition thanks to collaborations with Sub Focus and Brookes Brothers, alongside features on genre-leading compilation series Dimensions and Nightlife. A consistent production talent, he’s shown the kind of flair that’s caught the attention of figures such as Chase & Status, DJ Fresh, Sigma, Wilkinson, High Contrast, and beyond, with recent remixes for Crystal Fighters, Seinbao Sey, and Moko, joining previous rerubs for Nero and Netsky.

Signed to RAM Records / Virgin EMI, Wilkinson is the drum & bass producer and DJ on everyone’s lips, and following his chart success with ‘Afterglow’, ‘Half Light’ and ‘Dirty Love’, Wilkinson returns with brand new single Hopelessly Coping. The track features Thabo, the first signing to Naughty Boy’s Naughty Records label, who co-wrote the single along with Wilkinson. The single is released on 3rd May and premieres tonight as Annie Mac’s Special Delivery on Radio 1.
No stranger to the game, having remixed and collaborated with the likes of Ed Sheeran, Gorgon City, TC, Angel Haze, Naughty Boy, Chase & Status, Wretch 32, Katy B, Laura Mvula and Nero, he deservedly scooped ‘Best Single’, ‘Best Album’, ‘Best Video’ and ‘Best Producer’ at the 2014 Drum & Bass Awards. He was recently personally asked to remix The Prodigy’s latest single ‘Wild Frontier’.
Coming off the back of his phenomenal first headline tour with UKF in October, Wilkinson has helped successfully put Drum & Bass back on the map as a genre not to be reckoned with, pushing his sets to new limits in front of packed out crowds. Last summer also saw him perform at the Radio 1 Big Weekend, Glastonbury, Wireless, SW4, Reading, Leeds, T In The Park, EDC Vegas and a run of dates at Amnesia in Ibiza. Wilkinson recently announced his debut live show in London 3rd April at Brixton Electric. Showing no sign of slowing down, this show will see Wilkinson play his first show with a fully live 3-piece band and 4 vocalists. This summer, he will play headline live slots at Reading & Leeds Festival, SW4 and Snowbombing and will also be a resident at Amnesia in Ibiza.

ANDY C: “City Lights is classic, timeless DnB from Culture Shock. One of the most in demand tracks I’ve ever played!”

Finally confirmed for a May release, Culture Shock’s ‘City Lights’ (featuring Bryn Christopher) is one of the most anticipated drum & bass records of the past few years.
