Soweto Gospel Choir riding high after Grammy win

When the Soweto Gospel Choir was named as winner of the Grammy for Best World Music Album, it earned the ensemble a place in the music history books. The South African choir shares the inspiration behind their album “Freedom”, which earned them the award, a 12-track tribute to Nelson Mandela released to mark the 100th year of his birth.

US television celebrity Oprah Winfrey pays an emotional tribute to Nelson Mandela as she prepares to host a star-studded concert in Johannesburg to cap celebrations marking 100 years since his birth. The concert is the climax of a year of events celebrating the centennial of Mandela’s birth in 1918, and is part of a campaign to tackle poverty, child malnutrition and boost gender equality.

A memorial stone to Nelson Mandela is dedicated in the nave of Westminster Abbey, on the centenary of the birth of the former President of the Republic of South Africa. Nomatemba Tambo, High Commissioner for South Africa and Zamaswazi Dlamini-Mandela, granddaughter of Nelson Mandela attended the service.

Giant Mandela blanket portrait on display in South Africa

Carolyn Steyn, founder of 67 Blankets, came up with the initiative to make the largest portrait blanket of Nelson Mandela to celebrate 100 years since his birth. She called on her friends for help and developed a Facebook group called “67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day”. In just days, hundreds of people from around the world had pledged to knit a blanket for Nelson Mandela Day, including inmates at Zonderwater correctional services, who did the majority of the knitting.
