Molotov cocktails & tear gas: Police union, anti-police protesters clash in central Athens

Protesters hurled molotov cocktails at riot police who fired back with tear gas near the National Technical University of Athens on Thursday, following the Greek authorities’ decision to ban both groups’ gatherings in an effort to quell further clashes. Police POASY union had called for an open public meeting in the Exarcheia neighbourhood in order to discuss attacks on police, while groups of protesters organised a counter demonstration in the adjacent area of Kolonaki, which also claimed to be meeting against violence.
