What Joe Biden’s Flip-Flop On The Hyde Amendment Means For The Democratic Party (HBO)

Joe Biden no longer wants to be the only 2020 Democrat who supports a controversial rule to block federal funding for most abortions.

Biden said Thursday night that he doesn’t support the Hyde Amendment, a restriction added to the federal budget annually that prevents any money from going toward abortions — except in cases of rape, incest, or serious threats to the mother’s health. The U-turn comes just a day after his campaign told the New York Times Wednesday that he was still in favor of the rule.

Biden’s initial support made him the only 2020 candidate to come out in favor of Hyde, while a slew of his 2020 opponents — including the top three female candidates — almost immediately reiterated that they wanted to do away with the rule entirely.

On Wednesday, Sen. Elizabeth Warren flat-out called Biden’s original stance wrong and pointed out that Hyde most directly affected low-income women through Medicaid.

“Understand this: Women of means will still have access to abortions,” Warren said during an MSNBC town hall Wednesday night. “Who won’t will be poor women.”

Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders, and Cory Booker all doubled down this week as well and said they support repealing Hyde. Abortion groups, too, quickly came after Biden’s support for the law.

What Beto O’Rourke’s 2020 Bid Means For The Democratic Primary (HBO)

Beto O’Rourke, the U.S. congressman who gave Ted Cruz a surprising challenge in the Texas Senate race, has backtracked on his pledge not to run for president.

“I haven’t made any decisions about anything,” O’Rourke told TMZ on Tuesday.

In November — on the very day before the midterm election he narrowly lost to Cruz — O’Rourke said he would not be a candidate for the 2020 presidential election.

“I will not be a candidate for president in 2020,” O’Rourke told MSNBC. “That’s, I think, as definitive as those sentences get.”

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes Thinks President Trump’s Stance On China Is ‘Not At All Crazy’ | IGNITION 2018

Chris Hayes, host of “All In with Chris Hayes” on MSNBC speaks with Business Insider at IGNITION 2018 on political issues. Hayes comments on the trade war with China, saying that “trade hawkishness against China” is justified. He also says that he doesn’t trust the president to “navigate the difficulties of diplomacy” if the US entered a cold war with China.

Following is a transcript of the video:

Henry Blodget: Alright let’s come back to the other question, which is, so what issue do you think President Trump is right about that most liberals are wrong?Chris Hayes: I actually think the problem with the President is that there is the abstract position he has and then like the actual embodied version of it as run through his extremely strange brain. I think a sort of trade hawkishness against China and a posture of trade hawkishness against China is not at all crazy and not at all unjustified.I think there are lots of things that China is doing and has been doing for a long time that are genuinely destructive that generally speaking the American political class has been too content to sort of play “Patty Cake” with them. I think there are really important geopolitical reasons not to enter into a cold war with China and I certainly don’t trust the President to navigate the difficulties of that diplomacy but on a variety of issues there are all kinds of reasons to be genuinely more confrontational with China over their industrial policy.Blodget: Just before we came on stage, you noted that the President just tweeted that he is quote, “a tariff man.”Hayes: I’m a tariff man!Blodget: Yes! And so do you think that’s reasonable?Hayes: No, I mean that’s a good example of like, he genuinely has a sincerely… Sincerely felt and long-held view on trade that I think is deeply mercantilist and emanates from the fundamental worldview that he has over all other worldviews which is that everything is zero sum. Really views that, it’s like if you’re getting over on me, then I’m not getting over on you and vice versa. And that’s the only way things work and who screws who. Who gets the bigger piece of the pie? I think he views all trade that way.I think like the basic insights of Adam Smith “Wealth of Nations” and the idea of comparative vantage in trade are generally true. I think the modern trading system is broken in all kinds of ways and I think there are ways in which it’s not crazy to use tariffs as a tactic to create different kinds of rules and regulatory structures for international trade. Again, do I trust him to pursue that? No I do not.

Inside The Trump MAGA Hat Factory

We went inside the factory where President Donald Trump’s iconic “Make America Great Again,” or MAGA, hats are made. Located just outside Los Angeles, the factory employs around 100 workers, most of whom are Latino.

Following is a transcript of the video:

Narrator: The Trump campaign’s officially licensed “Make America Great Again,” or MAGA hats, are made here, at the Cali-Fame headwear factory in Carson, California, just outside of Los Angeles.

Brian Kennedy: The fabric, the cord, the plastic strap, the fabric underneath, the sweatband, the whole hat is made here in America.

Narrator: The company doesn’t only make MAGA hats. It specializes in all kinds of headwear, which it manufactures and customizes. But the company has worked with Trump for years. Before the campaign, Cali-Fame made hats for Trump’s golf courses.

Brian Kennedy: We’ve been making golf hats since the ’50s. Cali-Fame Los Angeles was one of the first golf hat manufacturers.

Narrator: The red MAGA hat retails for $25. Every purchase of a MAGA hat, along with any other item for sale on the Trump campaign’s official website, counts as a campaign contribution. Around 100 employees work in the factory, and according to an interview Brian Kennedy did with the Los Angeles Times in 2015, around 80% of the workforce is Latino. And according to the Trump campaign, all employees are verified U.S. citizens. We didn’t speak to any employees during our shoot. But in 2015, MSNBC visited the factory and reporter Jacob Soboroff spoke to some of the workers.

Jacob Soboroff: When you heard that Trump, you’re gonna make the hats for Trump, what was the first thought that went through your mind?

Cali-Fame Employee: Well, more work for us.

Jacob Soboroff: Some of the stuff that he’s said, it’s not been particularly nice to the Latino community. When you guys hear some of that stuff, what do you think?

Cali-Fame Employee: I just try to ignore it.

Narrator: Making the hats requires a 23-step process, much of which is done by hand.

Brian Kennedy: So the way we manufacture the hat, the first process is spreading material. We take it right to the embroidery machine, and then from embroidery we’re taking it right to the sewing operation where we’re creating both the bill and the crown separately, so that eventually we put these two parts together by attaching the sweatband, finishing it with the plastic strap that’s made in the U.S. Then we steam the hat, press the hat, and we also finish the cord and glue that down before we pack the hat.

Narrator: The hats are shipped to the headquarters of Ace Specialties in Lafayette, Louisiana. Ace is the Trump campaign’s official merchandise distributor, and the company fulfills all orders from the Trump campaign’s website. According to the Trump campaign, hundreds of thousands of MAGA hats have been sold since Trump’s campaign began.

Brian Kennedy: We are one of the few American companies left making hats. There is a need, a niche, for that American product, and that’s what we’ve been really striving for the last couple of years. It’s an incredible opportunity to make this hat for the President of the United States. I think that this hat is an icon for what is going on in the country and we’re really happy to make the hat for the president. Hopefully we can keep this going.

Russia divides US: How MSNBC lies to its viewers

It seems that MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow has accused Russia of trying to divide almost everything and everywhere – from Europe to Middle East. In the end, all her “solid” facts that she pushes so hard turn out to be nothing but poorly written lies.
