People Can’t Decide Which Side Of Town Kansas City’s MLK Jr. Blvd Should Be On (HBO)

Most large cities have a street named after Martin Luther King, Jr.

Kansas City, MO, doesn’t.

For years, residents have been trying to change this. And now, thanks to a coalition led by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, it looks like Kansas City will finally get its own MLK Blvd.

The trouble is — nobody can agree on where to put it.

Kansas City is one of the most segregated cities in the US. A road called Troost Avenue famously splits the city in two — the east side is mostly black, and the west side is overwhelmingly white. The current plan calls for renaming a long, iconic boulevard on the black side of town for King.

A lot of people — both black and white — would rather it be placed elsewhere.

This is turning what seems like a simple proposition: recognizing a civil rights icon – into a complicated discussion about race and boundaries.

VICE News traveled to Kansas City to see how a major American metropolis is deciding what honoring Dr. King looks like for them.

Patrolling for Poachers in Costa Rica (Excerpt from ‘Shell Game’)

Watch the Full Length – http://bit.ly/1TIBBL3

Since sea turtle conservation in Costa Rica began in the 1950s, conservationists and poachers have peacefully shared the beach. But the murder of the environmentalist Jairo Mora Sandoval in 2013 shocked the eco-friendly country and brought attention to a violent overlap between conservationism and drug trafficking in Costa Rica’s abundant national parks and untouched coastlines.

With five per cent of the world’s biodiversity, the unique geography of Costa Rica is a hotspot for eco-tourism and conservation work. However, it is that same geography that makes the country so vulnerable to the violent drug trade that surrounds its borders. Costa Rica has become a major transshipment point for drug traffickers, with deadly consequences for those caught in the middle.

In this excerpt, VICE News visits Moín beach with local police to see if tensions remain between poachers and conservationists on the isolated coastline.
