RAW: Saakashvili set free after supporters clash with security

Former Georgian President and Governor of Odessa Mikhail Saakashvili joined supporters in a large-scale protest that saw Saakashvili released after being initially detained in Kiev on Tuesday.

The van that was supposed to take Saakashvili away was intercepted by his supporters, leading to a one-hour standoff between protesters and security services, that saw Saakashvili released in an unexpected turn of events.

Supporters of the former President of Georgia, Mikhail Saakashvili, have freed him from police custody in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.

Saakashvili had earlier threatened to throw himself off the roof of the residential building where he lives, after police arrived to search his apartment.

Moment Georgia’s ex-leader Saakashvili threatens to jump off roof in Kiev

The footage shows former Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili threatening to jump off a roof in Kiev as Ukrainian police search his apartment, according to local media.

Law enforcement officials broke the door to Saakashvili’s apartment in central Kiev on Tuesday morning. Security forces searched the flat, while the former president of Georgia and ex-governor of Ukraine’s Odessa Region confined himself to the roof of the building.

Georgia’s former president Mikhail Saakashvili has made an unusual return to Ukraine – entering the country illegally on Sunday.
Saakashvili recently became stateless, after having had his Ukrainian citizenship revoked by the country’s president. Ukrainian police say he will now face criminal charges for illegally crossing the border – something he denies doing.
