How Rudy Giuliani Went Off The Rails: The Impeachment Show (Full Episode)

VICE News host Michael Moynihan gets drunk with Trump supporters in Brooklyn, finds out what happened to Rudy Giuliani, and asks Jane Fonda about the trap she set for Donald Trump.

8:00 — All roads lead to, from or through Rudy Giuliani. We chased down his former spokesman, Ken Frydman, to ask a central question: what the hell happened to Rudy?

13:11 — Congressman Eric Swalwell is the long-shot presidential candidate who dropped out of the race in July. Now’s he’s back in Congress — just in time for the impeachment hurricane to make landfall.

19:01 — We talk to Jane Fonda about the trap she set for President Trump

34:42 — We met with the creator of “Impeach the President” to see what he thinks about his song’s newfound popularity.

41:15 — While President Trump is generally despised in New York City, there’s a solid sliver of support for him in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn — a tight-knit, blue-collar, mostly white neighborhood where we spent the day day-drinking with locals.

What Obama’s Homeland Security Secretary Thinks About Trump’s Immigration Policy (HBO)

President Barack Obama’s former homeland security secretary Jeh Johnson would prefer not to be the frequent recipient of President Trump’s praise. But despite his party allegiance and previous employer, the president, his son, and the White House’s official Twitter feed have all recently praised Johnson for telling multiple interviewers that America’s southern border is “truly in a crisis.”
When VICE News’s Michael Moynihan sat down with Johnson to discuss Trump, the politics of immigration, and his tenure overseeing border enforcement, he was quick to point out that the president and his surrogates truncated his quote, leaving out his criticism of administration policies.
“I said that 4000 arrests on our southern border — one hundred thousand in a month — is truly a crisis,” Johnson told VICE News. “I then went on to, in the same interview, prescribe all the things I think should be done to deal with the crisis and what we seem to be doing wrong. The one sentence ‘it is truly a crisis’ went viral.”
Johnson, who began his career in politics interning for Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, a centrist Democrat, acknowledges that his party is lurching to the left — and that the Obama administration’s aggressive immigration policies would get a tougher reception these days.

Dinesh D’Souza’s Movie Equates Democrats With Nazis (HBO)

Outside the precincts of professional conservatism, author and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza’s influence has gone largely unnoticed. But of the top ten grossing documentaries of all time, the number five spot is held by D’Souza — an anti-Obama movie that brought in $33 million.

Now D’Souza is back with Death of a Nation, a two-hour attack on Democrats that doubles as a celebration of Donald Trump.

D’Souza was once considered the thinking man’s conservative, with a sinecure at an influential think tank and books that — while controversial — were reviewed in high-brow publications.

But D’Souza eventually determined that intellectuals couldn’t effect political change, so the once marginal right-wing egghead remade himself into a brawling, even more right-wing activist.

He draws from personal experience as a reference point for the hard shift. In 2014, he was convicted of making an illegal campaign contribution and sentenced to five years of probation. In May, President Trump pardoned him. But D’Souza thinks his conviction stands as proof that fascism has taken over the Democratic party.

VICE News’ Michael Moynihan sat down with D’Souza ahead of the premiere of Death of a Nation.

“I would be happy to disarm the moment I see the other side disarming I’ll be happy to show goodwill the moment I see an ounce of goodwill coming from the other side,” D’Souza said. “The militancy that’s coming for me at this point is is driven by a militant situation.”

Why Sweden’s Warmth Is Fading Toward Migrants (HBO)

Last year, more than 160,000 migrants fleeing war in the Middle East ended up in Sweden, a country of only 9.5 million people. That’s the highest number of refugees per capita in Europe. But an increasing number of Swedes have grown impatient with their country’s generosity. Now, many of those migrants are being asked to leave. The government says that up to 80,000 will be deported, a large number of whom come from Afghanistan. In October, Sweden joined Germany in reaching an agreement with Afghanistan to repatriate tens of thousands of rejected asylum seekers. Michael Moynihan went to northern Sweden to meet with some of the migrants awaiting their fate.

The Biggest Act Of Presidential Clemency In A Single Day (HBO)

President Obama has commuted the sentences of 153 prisoners and pardoned 78 more. It’s the biggest act of presidential clemency on a single day—ever. And it’s only a drop in the bucket.

The US is home to about 5 percent of the world’s population–and more than 20 percent of the world’s prisoners, and a surprising number of those prisoners are in solitary confinement — visit solitary.vice.com to learn why one man is voluntarily entering solitary confinement for 30 days.

Harsh sentencing laws, like mandatory minimums, often give a judge no choice but to hand down lengthy sentences—including life in prison.

In 1980, 41,000 Americans were locked up for drug offenses. By 2014 that number was 488,000.

Starting in 1988, possession of as little as 5 grams of crack cocaine triggered a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 to 20 years behind bars.

Laws like these disproportionately affect African-Americans. Who make up 13 percent of the total population, but 38% of the drug offenders in state prisons.

Now, President Obama is trying to undo some of the system’s most unfair sentences.

Michael Moynihan reports from California.

Squatters Are Taking Over Las Vegas’ Abandoned Houses (HBO)

This segment originally aired Oct. 19, 2016, on VICE News Tonight on HBO.

“I would just eat out of the trash, sleep on the ground,” a squatter named Dawn Louden told VICE News correspondent Michael Moynihan about life before squatting. “You do what you have to do to survive.”

Las Vegas was hit harder by the 2007 economic downturn than most cities, and evicting squatters from previously foreclosed houses has become a priority for the Las Vegas Metro Police. “What we’ve typically seen is a direct correlation to a squatter house being the nucleus of crime for that neighborhood,” Lt. Nick Farese said. “You just really never know what’s going to be on the other side of the door.”

Former CIA head Michael Hayden on why he won’t endorse Trump or Clinton

On August 15, General Michael Hayden, the former head of the CIA and NSA, said Donald Trump has “autocrat envy.” Hayden was one of 50 officials from past Republican administrations who signed a letter labeling Donald Trump a risk to America’s “national security and well-being.”

VICE News’ Michael Moynihan sat down with Hayden shortly after Donald Trump gave his first major policy speech about national security and counter-terrorism.

Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson courts disaffected voters in Cleveland

With unprecedented numbers of Republicans and Democrats unhappy with their party’s nominee, former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson is pulling disaffected voters to the Libertarian party ticket.

Johnson could be a spoiler this election: He’s currently polling at 13 percent, just shy of the 15 percent needed to get on the debate stage with Trump and Clinton.

VICE News correspondent Michael Moynihan caught up with Gary Johnson during this week’s Republican convention.

The Information War Between South and North Korea (Excerpt from ‘Propaganda Over Pyongyang’)

Watch the full documentary: http://bit.ly/1CsatdF

North and South Korea are, both legally and philosophically, in a state of war. While the guns may be silent, the conflict between the two countries has now become one of propaganda.

With the assistance of the Human Rights Foundation, North Korean defectors now in South Korea have been launching hydrogen-filled balloons across the 38th parallel — carrying both money and propaganda. In late 2014, a balloon launch sparked a brief exchange of gunfire between North and South Korean soldiers, and even more recently, Pyongyang has promised that hellfire will rain on South Korea if any copies of the controversial Hollywood comedy The Interview make it across the border.

In this excerpt, VICE News correspondent Michael Moynihan attends a clandestine launch of propaganda balloons into the Hermit Kingdom.
