The Evolution (Or Not) Of School Shootings In America Since Columbine (HBO)

When the Columbine shooting happened in 1999, the survivors had no concept of what a school shooting was. Neither did most of America.

“We thought there was some sort of unknown or undisclosed senior prank going on,” said Zach Cartaya, now 37, who survived the shooting and has since started an organization that helps survivors of mass shootings. “Something to do with fireworks in the parking lot.”

Twenty years later, school shootings have become a staple of news cycles, and active shooter drills have been put into place in schools across the country. School shootings have become a thing all students know about, and to some extent, expect to happen.

“It’s sort of just an unspoken fear that we all had growing up,” said Marisol Garrido, who survived the Parkland school shooting.

But even as shootings at schools have become more common, little has changed in terms of either policy or the public’s ability to reckon with them productively.

“I thought it would end after us,” said Garrido, now a junior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. “I thought that it was enough to make any sort of change but it’s a year later. I don’t really see anything done. I guess school shootings will end when America wants to. They just don’t want to yet.”

Gun Rights Supporters Are Tailing Parkland Students On Their Gun Control Tour (HBO)

Students who survived the Parkland shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February are on a country-wide bus tour called the “Road to Change” this summer to push for gun reform legislation. They’ve gained a following — but not just the one you’d might expect.

The students are now being tailed across the country by a group of gun-rights activists called the Utah Gun Exchange, who travel in a military-style armored vehicle and hold their own counter-protests.

The Utah Gun Exchange is classifieds advertisement website for Utah residents to buy and sell guns and gun parts. And members of the group have been following the March For Our Lives students on their tour in an attempt to engage with students, supporters and activists on the topic of second amendment and school safety issues.

“I honestly cannot hate the March for Our Lives folks. In fact, I love them. They’re kids, to the degree that the kids are actually talking,” said Utah guns rights activist Clark Aposhian at one stop on the tour. ”I may be the gun lobbyist, but you’re the gun lobby.”

VICE News embedded with both sides as they geared up for an event in Salt Lake City, where the debate was everywhere — on the bus, in the armored vehicle, and even outside the venue, as supporters and opponents faced off in the parking lot.

Teens Tell VICE Why They’re Protesting After The Parkland Shooting

Generation Z has grown up in a world where active shooter threats and lockdown drills are the norm, and they’ve had enough.

In the wake of the Valentine’s Day massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 dead, the angry, exasperated, and heartbroken voices of student survivors have emerged as forces of change. They’ve tweeted at Trump, marched on Washington and Tallahassee, and called out the National Rifle Association.

Now, high school students across the country are organizing in solidarity with their peers from Parkland, who are planning a march on Washington, D.C. on March 24, called “March for Our Lives.” Frustrated by what they labeled as the older generations’ failure to keep them safe in their schools, local teens are taking matters into their own hands by planning at least three days of action nationwide.

VICE News spoke to students across the country — from Florida cities near Parkland to Pittsburgh and Decatur, Georgia — who are determined to make sure that another mass shooting never happens.
