Lyon Festival of Lights kicks off for four days

The Festival of Lights launches in Lyon, France with four nights of multi-coloured enchantment and illuminations at the city’s symbolic sites. The programme includes the creation of 80 artists from 12 countries. Nearly 2 million people are expected to attend until Sunday.

Lyon’s Lumiere Festival opens, honouring cinema

Opening ceremony of the 10th edition of the Lumiere Film Festival at the Tony Garnier Hall in Lyon. This year the Lumiere Prize will be awarded to actress and producer Jane Fonda. Claude Lelouch was the guest of honour at Saturday night’s opening ceremony, where one of his greatest successes “Itineraire d’un enfant gate” was screened.

Roma families integrate French community

Roma families evacuated from a slum in 2015 in France were subsequently sent to a village set up to help them integrate with the surrounding community. The initiative in Saint-Genis-les-Ollieres, near Lyon divided local opinion. Three years later, the village is about to close its doors, most families having been relocated.

Japan’s Crown Prince lights up the Eiffel Tower

Japanese Crown Prince Naruhito, who will become emperor in May 2019, kicks off a sound and light show casting the Eiffel Tower in Japan’s colours. The emperor-in waiting is on a long visit to France, which has taken him successively to Lyon, Grenoble, Burgundy, Château de Versailles and Paris. IMAGES
