The US football player Megan Rapinoe has won FIFA Women’s Player of the Year award.
Rapinoe beat fellow World Cup winner Alex Morgan and England’s Lucy Bronze to the women’s title, with US coach Jill Ellis winning women’s coaching award.
The 34-year-old Rapinoe won the Golden Boot for being top scorer and the Golden Ball for the best player at the World Cup, and also became the face of the tournament for her outspoken views on US president Donald Trump.
England star Lucy Bronze believes the time has come for the Lionesses to make it to the final of the women’s World Cup as they head into Tuesday’s huge last-four showdown with holders the United States, led by the outspoken Megan Rapinoe. Ahead of the match some 20,000 Americans have inundated Lyon, to the delight of tourism officials in the city.
