Bahrain’s Grand Prix Sparks Human Rights Protests

Formula 1’s annual Bahrain Grand Prix opened April 17 to global fanfare, but demonstrators in the small Gulf kingdom off the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia have been protesting the motorsports event for weeks, accusing Formula 1’s management of ignoring longstanding human rights abuses in the country.

This year’s race comes at an awkward time for Bahrain’s ruling al Khalifa family. On April 2, Nabeel Rajab — one of the country’s most prominent human rights activists — was arrested on charges of insulting the kingdom. VICE News was with Rajab shortly before his arrest, when he accused Western governments of turning a blind eye to Bahraini government abuse.

Back in London, activists continue to rally against Britain’s conduct in Bahrain. VICE News met up with members of the Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy as they protested the arrival of Prince Nassar bin Hamad al Khalifa — nicknamed the “Playboy Prince” — who has been accused of being involved with the torture of political prisoners.

Simple Technique – Cold Steppin

Buy vinyl: http://bit.ly/1CWSVAl

After cementing his standing in the world of 170bpm beats and bass with a number of releases on a diverse range of imprints, including Metalheadz, Ram Records, Critical Music and others, Xtrah steps into 2015 with a brand new label of his own. The London based producer and DJ is proud to introduce Cyberfunk, and kicks things off with a four track EP.

Talented up-and-coming duo Simple Technique take the reins on ‘Cold Steppin’. Brooding and dark, the track shows a mature level of sound design from the newcomers discovered by Xtrah who will be part of the inception of Cyberfunk. Definitely a name to keep an eye on in future.

Signed to RAM Records / Virgin EMI, Wilkinson is the drum & bass producer and DJ on everyone’s lips, and following his chart success with ‘Afterglow’, ‘Half Light’ and ‘Dirty Love’, Wilkinson returns with brand new single Hopelessly Coping. The track features Thabo, the first signing to Naughty Boy’s Naughty Records label, who co-wrote the single along with Wilkinson. The single is released on 3rd May and premieres tonight as Annie Mac’s Special Delivery on Radio 1.
No stranger to the game, having remixed and collaborated with the likes of Ed Sheeran, Gorgon City, TC, Angel Haze, Naughty Boy, Chase & Status, Wretch 32, Katy B, Laura Mvula and Nero, he deservedly scooped ‘Best Single’, ‘Best Album’, ‘Best Video’ and ‘Best Producer’ at the 2014 Drum & Bass Awards. He was recently personally asked to remix The Prodigy’s latest single ‘Wild Frontier’.
Coming off the back of his phenomenal first headline tour with UKF in October, Wilkinson has helped successfully put Drum & Bass back on the map as a genre not to be reckoned with, pushing his sets to new limits in front of packed out crowds. Last summer also saw him perform at the Radio 1 Big Weekend, Glastonbury, Wireless, SW4, Reading, Leeds, T In The Park, EDC Vegas and a run of dates at Amnesia in Ibiza. Wilkinson recently announced his debut live show in London 3rd April at Brixton Electric. Showing no sign of slowing down, this show will see Wilkinson play his first show with a fully live 3-piece band and 4 vocalists. This summer, he will play headline live slots at Reading & Leeds Festival, SW4 and Snowbombing and will also be a resident at Amnesia in Ibiza.

The Existence EP pulls no punches straight out of the gate. The production is precise and razor sharp, all the while retaining that tech edge Xtrah has become known for.We Exist’ is a lesson in tight, rolling percussion work – edits and drop outs sit perfectly among more trademark Xtrah bass hits.

Safire – Shinobi [SGN:LTD]

Buy ot here ► https://pro.beatport.com/release/deep-architect-ft-morph-shinobi/1461876

The Melbourne resident Safire has been making waves throughout the scene over the last couple of years with releases on acclaimed independents Dispatch Records, Invisible Recordings, Mindtech and now SGN.

This is the double AA side of the new single – Shinobi is a rolling drum and bass track peppered with instrumentals inspired by Safire’s mini European tour in 2014. It was during shows at Outlook in Croatia, Amsterdam and London that Safire collected a series of ‘cultural materials’ that resulted in Shinobi; both a nod to SGN’s Ninja roots, to the gamer crew and those who like it grimey on the dancefloor.

Frankee – Drop It Low

Originating from the bass-heavy hotbed that is London town, Frankee is one of many producers that are helping to shape drum & bass for a new era. And having already expelled himself from the tide of competition clawing for the top, he’s created his own identity with nerve-twitching, eardrum encapsulating releases.
His debut ‘Turning Point’ EP saw him elevated above his predecessors, whilst monstrous sleuth ‘Gully’ became a track which resounded throughout last year, a sure-fire weapon for every dancefloor detonator.
This time, however, Frankee covers every base within the space of a four-track centrepiece. From the intricately woven feat of ‘Deep Down’, back to the zigzagging bassline of ‘Drop it Low’, every avenue is crossed to display his prestige in the world of production standards.

A fairground of musicality, ‘Drop it Low’ is the perfect reintroduction to Frankee’s ability to flip the switch and take you into a quirkier dimension of sound. The riff is undeniably catchy; grabbing you by the shoulders and submerging you in pulses of reverberating subs. Snapping, biting and with commanding vocal samples that literally throw themselves at you, Frankee is back and proving his merit.

Bursting with vocal crescendos and peppered with moody percussion, ‘Deep Down’ pedestals the different shades of drum & bass that Frankee can conjure. Caan’s voice stands at the record’s core, creating heartfelt emotion which is difficult to shake off, weaving between its structure. Reminding of earlier productions, such as the ‘Away’ remix which paved the way for 2014, it’s stocky composition ensures a hard hitting sound, whilst an arpeggio of piano notes softens the blow. A demonstrative masterpiece, it sees Frankee seep into the genre’s every corner, whilst holding his title as a compositionally aggressive heavyweight.

A Fugitive and his Family: Escape to the Islamic State

Abu Rumaysah, also known as Siddhartha Dhar, is reported to have traveled to Syria with his family after fleeing the UK while on conditional bail. The Islamist convert was one of nine people arrested on September 25 on suspicion of supporting the banned terrorist organization al Muhajiroun.

Two days after his arrest, Rumaysah failed to comply with bail conditions requiring him to hand in his travel documents and instead boarded a coach from London to Paris with his wife and four children, which was reportedly headed for Syria.

After weeks of speculation concerning his whereabouts, Rumaysah posted an image to Twitter showing him posing with a baby and an automatic rifle. He claimed that he had made it to the Islamic State. “What a shoddy security system Britain must have to allow me to breeze through Europe to the Islamic State,” he wrote.

VICE News spent time with Abu Rumaysah before he fled to find out more about his activities in imposing Sharia law in the UK and his views on foreign policy. We also interviewed radical preacher Anjem Choudary, who was arrested on the same charge, and spoke with him about Rumaysah’s exit from the UK.

Bahrain: An Inconvenient Uprising (Extra Scene)

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

Like many countries in the Middle East and beyond, Bahrain erupted with anti-authoritarian protests in 2011 when the Arab Spring took the region and many of its repressive leaders by surprise.

While Arab Spring uprisings found favor with many in the West, unfortunately for the people of Bahrain, their own revolution was largely forgotten. But it never went away — for three years, near-nightly protests have been brutally quashed by militarized security forces.

Earlier this year, VICE News correspondent Ben Anderson travelled to London to speak with Nabeel Rajab, the unofficial leader of Bahrain’s uprising, and then headed undercover to Bahrain, where he met activists, protestors, grieving parents, and alleged torture victims.

Nu:Tone – Oneroa [Full Version]

iTunes: http://hospi.tl/6futurehistory
Hospital Shop: http://hospi.tl/8futurehistory
Google Play: http://hospi.tl/20futurehistory

Join the album launch of Nu:Tone’s forthcoming album Future History in London on 28.11.2014 http://hospi.tl/nutonelondon or Cambridge on 13.11.2014 http://hospi.tl/nutonecambridge

’Future History’ is Nu:Tone’s fourth studio album. Nu:Tone is an artist with the kind of rich history and authority to be able to reach into drum+bass’ deepest past and create an album of snapshots from the many ages of jungle; with knowing nods to classic tracks and the sound of hallmark events – from ‘Swerve’ at the Velvet Rooms to ‘Logical Progression’ and ‘Hospitality at Heaven’.

Opening with the epic ‘‘Til Dawn’ – recalling New Deep Society’s ‘Warehouse Dayz of Glory’ – an apt mission statement for the project. Soul chanteuse Lea Lea adds spine tingling vocals to ‘Tides’ before Hospitality favourite Dynamite MC steps up to the mic with the infectious bassline wobbler ‘Cannibals’. Further into the dark interior of the album things get murky with twisted rap genius, and original Ultramagnetic MC, Kool Keith blessing ‘Metaphor 6000’. As the voice of the prodigy’s ‘Smack My B*tch Up’, it’s a rare appearance for the seminal US rapper, and a coup for Nu:Tone. Across thirteen tracks, ‘Future History’ is bursting with moments of genius – each track looking squarely forward through a prism of the past.

Few drum+bass artists command the same respect as Nu:Tone, both within the scene and across the wider dance music community, with his recent discography taking in remixes for the likes of 3 beat, Warner and Sony. Nu:Tone has stripped down and re-worked the likes of Axwell, Sandy Revera et al, with Major labels clamouring for his skills behind a mixing desk.
