The Revolt That Never Went Away — Bahrain: An Inconvenient Uprising

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

Like many countries in the Middle East and beyond, Bahrain erupted with anti-authoritarian protests in 2011 when the Arab Spring took the region and many of its repressive leaders by surprise.

While Arab Spring uprisings found favor with many in the West, unfortunately for the people of Bahrain, their own revolution was largely forgotten. But it never went away — for three years, near-nightly protests have been brutally quashed by militarized security forces.

Earlier this year, VICE News correspondent Ben Anderson travelled to London to speak with Nabeel Rajab, the unofficial leader of Bahrain’s uprising, and then headed undercover to Bahrain, where he met activists, protestors, grieving parents, and alleged torture victims.

Quintessential stadium anthems are Delta Heavy’s forte and ‘Reborn’ demonstrates how they’ve gained this reputation. Setting show stopping-agendas since their first release on the RAM imprint, this next one is no different, however, a cinematic roller isn’t all this release has to offer. With remixes from Spoils and June Miller, there’s a colour reel of sound spinning throughout; a host of tracks to suit every palette.
‘Reborn’ embodies exactly what Delta Heavy represents as a collaborative project. An arpeggio of notes leads delicately into emotionally charged vocals, pedestalling the record and creating a musically picturesque backdrop. With the undertow of a pounding morphine bassline and the relentless instrumentation of jungle infused drums, there’s no mistaking the artists’ nod towards their harder productions. Epic, timeless and puffed out with a grandeur composition, Delta Heavy have yet to disappoint.
On the remixes, June Miller carefully crafts their take against the original, uncompromising yet delicately woven and not without its predecessors’ emotional crescendo. And lastly, Spoils introduces us to a genre-infused uptake that catches you unaware, with a steppy melody which stays true to its roots yet delves deep into Spoil’s production aptitude.
So once again, it’s time to take up Delta Heavy’s offerings. They’ve delivered the perfect successor to their ‘Apollo EP’, yet again reasserting their title as one of the bass scene’s heavyweights.

’Future History’ is Nu:Tone’s fourth studio album. Nu:Tone is an artist with the kind of rich history and authority to be able to reach into drum+bass’ deepest past and create an album of snapshots from the many ages of jungle; with knowing nods to classic tracks and the sound of hallmark events – from ‘Swerve’ at the Velvet Rooms to ‘Logical Progression’ and ‘Hospitality at Heaven’.

Opening with the epic ‘‘Til Dawn’ – recalling New Deep Society’s ‘Warehouse Dayz of Glory’ – an apt mission statement for the project. Soul chanteuse Lea Lea adds spine tingling vocals to ‘Tides’ before Hospitality favourite Dynamite MC steps up to the mic with the infectious bassline wobbler ‘Cannibals’. Further into the dark interior of the album things get murky with twisted rap genius, and original Ultramagnetic MC, Kool Keith blessing ‘Metaphor 6000’. As the voice of the prodigy’s ‘Smack My B*tch Up’, it’s a rare appearance for the seminal US rapper, and a coup for Nu:Tone. Across thirteen tracks, ‘Future History’ is bursting with moments of genius – each track looking squarely forward through a prism of the past.

Few drum+bass artists command the same respect as Nu:Tone, both within the scene and across the wider dance music community, with his recent discography taking in remixes for the likes of 3 beat, Warner and Sony. Nu:Tone has stripped down and re-worked the likes of Axwell, Sandy Revera et al, with Major labels clamouring for his skills behind a mixing desk.

Metrik – Infinity [Full Version]

Hospital Shop – http://hospi.tl/9universallanguage
iTunes – http://hospi.tl/26universallanguage
Google Play – http://hospi.tl/43universallanguage

Since signing to Hospital Records in October 2012, Metrik finally arrives with his long-awaited debut album ‘Universal Language’, and believe us, it does not disappoint. Having already built a reputation as one of the hottest stars in d’n’b, he delivers an eclectic blend of anthemic and euphoric tracks to showcase his musically expansive sound.

Metrik demonstrates his uncompromising quality control by collaborating with high profile vocalists and producers. His chart topping debut single ‘Want My Love’ (Mixmag’s ‘Single Of The Month’) features vocals from Elisabeth Troy of MJ Cole fame, who, fresh from touring with Clean Bandit brings an iconic, gorgeously soulful component to the table. Metrik reunites with vocalist Jan Burton for his second single ‘Human Again’ offering an infectious slice of summer d’n’b receiving heavy rotation across the festival circuit. Switching styles, we welcome the weighty lyrics from London based hip-hop artist Kyza as well as a collaboration with Australian bass music star ShockOne, adding their unique flavour to this sonically diverse body of work.

Performing at key events across the globe including Glastonbury, Global Gathering and Hospitality Brixton Academy, those fortunate to catch his energetic DJ sets have had a taste of the fire he has brought to this LP. Already a firm favourite of many A-list and radio DJ’s alike, this album solidifies Metrik as one of the top tier artists in d’n’b and beyond.

Ed Rush – Boxcar [Piranha Pool]

Ed Rush
‘Scarabs’ / ‘Box Car’
1. Scarabs
2. Box Car

Label: Piranha Pool Recordings *LAUNCH*
Cat #: PPR001
Genre: Drum & Bass
Full Release: 06-10-2014

An artist synonymous with Drum and Bass, Ed Rush has become a byword for cutting edge, forward thinking beats. Moving through the sounds of hip hop and electro in his early musical years, Ed Rush soon became interested in the emerging London jungle scene. Showing his innate ability to manipulate chopped breakbeats and piles of sub-low bass, it wasn’t long before Ed Rush and Nico dropped the huge ‘Bludclot rtattack’. The first classic to Ed Rush’s name, this proved to be a platform for another collaboration with DJ Trace. Simultaneously developing his own style whilst pushing the boundaries of a genre, classics such as ‘The Mutant’ and ‘Guncheck’ put Ed Rush’s attitude injected productions firmly on the map.

One of the pioneers of new sound dubbed Techstep, Ed Rush soon teamed up within another leading light, Optical; to form what would become one of the most progressive production teams in the scene. In 1998, Ed Rush & Optical released an album universally recognized as changing the landscape of Drum and Bass forever with the legendary, ‘Wormhole’ on Virus Recordings. Still regarded as one of the main catalysts for the Neuro and Techstep sound, ‘Wormhole’ paved the way for household names such as Noisia, Bad Company and many more.

Since then Ed Rush has released a plethora of genre-defining tracks and albums, both solo and with his partner in crime, Optical. Still busy at work on a new Ed Rush & Optical LP due in late 2013, Ed Rush is not merely content with helping shape the scene and remaining one of its most consistent producers. Beginning his own venture, he now looks to the future with the birth of Piranha Pool. An outlet for showcasing new talent and veterans alike, Piranha Pool represents what will be the future of Drum and Bass; so it’s fitting that its first release comes from its creator, Ed Rush.

‘Boxcar’ [Drum & Bass]
The flipside sees Ed Rush change the pace but lose none of the attitude. Featuring rolling drums and ethereal vocals, Ed continues to bring the pain with serrated bass keeping the rave in check. Maintaining the same top level production as the A-side but pushing a different vibe, ‘Boxcar’ shows the versatility to Ed Rush’s productions and caps off a stunning debut from Piranha Pool.
