Lesbos continues to feel ‘burden’ years after migrant crisis

When thousands of people fleeing war began to arrive on their Greek island, many on Lesbos sought to welcome them. Four years later a sprawling local camp is packed with desperate migrants and islanders’ patience is wearing thin. Ahead of the European elections in May, the people of Lesbos are feeling ‘forgotten’.

Lesbos refugees march against persecution, EU-Turkey refugee deal

Hundreds of refugees marched in Lesbos, Greece on Saturday, to protest against the EU-Turkey refugee agreement and to draw attention to the living conditions in the island’s Moria migrant camp. The protesters marched with banners and flags chanting “freedom” and demanding the closure of the Moria detention facility as they made their way to the island’s capital Mytilene. The EU-Turkey refugee deal was signed one year ago. Under the agreement, Greece is allowed to return all ‘irregular’ migrants to Turkey and in return EU member states are to resettle more of the Syrian refugees living in Turkey.

Migrants and Refugees Test Lesbos’ Limits: Breaking Borders (Dispatch 5)

Just a few miles from Turkey, Greece’s Aegean islands are the frontline in Europe’s migrant crisis, as more and more refugees risk a dangerous sea crossing to escape the chaos of the Middle East.

As dinghies land on the shores of the island of Lesbos, and life jackets scatter the beaches, the migrants and refugees wait for ferries to take them to mainland Greece, a gateway into the European Union.

Yet the island is struggling to register and accommodate the new arrivals, and tensions have mounted as small groups of local citizens demonstrate against the presence of Muslim refugees.

VICE News travels to Lesbos, where a sudden influx of 20,000 migrants has stretched the island’s ability to cope to breaking point.

The Migrant Burial Ground (Extra Scene from ‘Death Boats to Greece: Europe or Die’)

Since 2000, more than 27,000 migrants and refugees have died attempting the perilous journey to Europe. With an unprecedented number of people breaking through its heavily barricaded borders in 2014, the EU continues to fortify its frontiers.

VICE News presents Europe or Die, a new four-part series that documents the efforts of those risking their lives to reach Europe, and the forces tasked to keep them out.

In this extra scene from ‘Death Boats to Greece: Europe or Die,’ VICE News correspondent Milène Larsson visits a cemetery on the island of Lesbos, where those Syrian and Afghan refugees who perished en route to the European island on the notorious “death boats” are unceremoniously buried.
