Wikileaks editor discusses Assange’s “appalling” jail conditions

WikiLeaks editor-in-chief Kristinn Hrafnsson discusses Julian Assange’s “appalling” prison conditions, saying the Wikileaks founder is being held in solitary confinement at Belmarsh prison in southeast London. Hrafnsson was speaking outside a court on Thursday where Assange said he would oppose extradition to the United States as the legal process began, a day after he was jailed for breaching his bail conditions in a former case. Wikileaks Julian Assange jailed for 50 weeks for UK bail breach

Julian Assange’s sentence for skipping bail is an ‘outrage’ and ‘vindictive’, says Kristinn Hrafnsson, the editor-in-chief of Wikileaks. Assange was sentenced to the 50 weeks in jail for breaching a British court order seven years ago, when he took refuge in Ecuador’s London embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden.

‘We need to fight not for Assange or Wikileaks but for press freedom’ – Hrafnsson

Julian Assange faces sentencing for jumping bail in Britain and possible extradition to the US, which is the ultimate thing ‘we need to fight not just for Julian Assange, not just for WikiLeaks but for press freedom,’ editor-in-chief Kristinn Hrafnsson commented.

Hraffson said that Assange is currently confined to a cell at Belmarsh Prison, a grim facility in southeast London, however, it makes it easier for Assange to meet with his legal team than it was at the embassy, where a feud with Ecuadorian authorities had led to a ban of most guests.
